A Simplified Staffing Business Model

Posted on

In much the same way Amazon and eBay have helped many get their start in starting, developing and running an e-commerce business, this same help is now available in starting a staffing business.

There are now well over two million third-party sellers on Amazon. The infrastructure that is on Amazon and eBay is plug_ and_ play for all who try and claim their stake on these selling platforms.

With this in mind, the traditional route for those seeking an opportunity to start their own staffing business included the need for a large capital infusion, a payroll system, access to high-cost worker's compensation insurance and many other costs that were prohibitive for most to enter the industry.

For many who do have the resources to enter the staffing industry, they often turn to high-cost franchise staffing companies who enjoy a large slice of earnings for the lifetime of the business. This relationship can grow strained over time and at some point the operator may feel they are contributing more to the franchise than the franchise is contributing to the operator. When this occurs, the separation from the business can grow messy and can even end in litigation.

The simplicity of both Amazon and eBay and their policies are a big draw for many who are looking to sell products online. There are no long-term agreements or costs that can easily cripple a new business. Being able to be flexible in a new venture is always a great asset and both these platforms allow for it.

This flexibility platform is now available in the world of staffing and has over 150 firms using this unique business model to grow impressive sized businesses with many reaching over a million in first-year billing. With over half a billion under management in less than 10 years in operation, one can see this is becoming a great alternative to going it alone or entering into a long-term agreement with a franchise.

What you get on the platform:

  • Worker's compensation insurance with no liability to the operator.
  • An unlimited funding source for all payroll and client billing.
  • A complete back-office for all management and personnel needs.
  • Access to professionals with over 40 years of staffing experience.

With all the boxes checked, this platform can be summed up as the Amazon or eBay of the staffing industry. If mitigation of risk is high on your list for starting a sustainable, prosperous business there are few options that can match what is now available.

Handmade Jewelry Descriptions

Posted on

A problem which many of us have is finding words to describe our handmade jewelry. Designing a product is inspirational. Assembling the product is dependent on our craft skills. But writing detailed handmade jewelry descriptions has its challenges.

“Become the center of attention with this beautiful red beaded bracelet.” This sentence does not truly describe the bracelet nor will it attract a buyer. “Let your friends envy this 8″ triple strand red beaded bracelet;” this statement will not sell the product.

Ordering from an online source, brochure, or a catalog requires imagery which will help the purchaser to see and feel the article with the use of words.

Visualization Tip:

  • Place a blindfold around your eyes and have someone read one of your jewelry descriptions which you have written. Are you able to visualize the jewelry piece or will you need to remove the blindfold?
  • Have that same person read aloud a description of a jewelry piece from a catalog or a magazine. Draw a mental or physical picture of the jewelry piece. Does the jewelry piece reflect the written description?

Choose words wisely:

Select adjectives which will give accuracy to your handmade jewelry descriptions of necklaces, bracelets, earrings, pendants, anklets, and other jeweled accessories which you are selling. Use words which will paint a truthful picture of the finished jewelry product.

Descriptive word choices may include:

  • Size – one size fits all or list specific sizes
  • Technique – net weaving
  • Color adjectives – Sunset pink
  • Construction materials – imported teak wood from Africa
  • Unique name – African sunset
  • A story relating to the source of inspiration
  • Inspiration – the desert oasis of the Sahara
  • Number manufactured – one of a kind or Limited edition
  • Emotional responses

Do not use too many flowery adjectives or expressions. Describing the article will help the customer to visualize the product and will help eliminate disappointment, negative advertising because of a poor description, or returning an unwanted purchase for a refund.

Consider the customers which you are targeting and use words appropriate to the gender and age of the customer. Jewelry for children would be described much differently than jewelry for an adult.

How will it benefit the customer? Will this one of a kind jewelry piece fulfill their dreams or desires for their special occasion or event?

Help the customer with emotional descriptions as well as accurate physical qualities of the handmade jewelry. Do not over romance the description.

Kano Model & Critical-To-Quality Tree

Posted on

Developed in the 80’s by Professor Noriaki Kano, the Kano model is based on the concepts of customer quality and provides a simple ranking scheme which distinguishes between essential and differentiating attributes. The model is a powerful way of visualizing product characteristics and stimulating debate within the design team. Kano also produced a rigorous methodology for mapping consumer responses into the model.

Product characteristics can be classified as:

Threshold / Basic attributes

– Attributes which must be present in order for the product to be successful, and can be viewed as a ‘price of entry’. However, the customer will remain neutral towards the product even with improved execution of these threshold and basic attributes.

One dimensional attributes (Performance / Linear)

– These characteristics are directly correlated to customer satisfaction. Increased functionality or quality of execution will result in increased customer satisfaction. Conversely, decreased functionality results in greater dissatisfaction. Product price is often related to these attributes.

Attractive attributes (Exciters / Delighters)

– Customers receive great satisfaction from a feature and are willing to pay a price premium. However, satisfaction will not decrease (below neutral) if the product lacks the feature. These features are often unexpected by customers and can be difficult to establish as needs during initial design. They are sometimes called unknown or latent needs.

Next, we organize customer needs into a Critical-To-Quality tree

The purpose of Critical-To-Quality trees is to convert customer needs/wants to measurable requirements for the business to implement.

For example: A retail merchant was receiving a significant number of complaints regarding their homeowner warranty policies from their customers. By analyzing customer survey data and developing the CTQ tree, the business was able to identify critical-to-satisfaction requirements. These requirements became the focus for improving customer satisfaction. The business eliminated mandatory warranty visits and made all warranty visits optional. Eliminating mandatory visits satisfied the customers who thought there were too many visits and adding an extra optional visit satisfied customers who thought there were too few visits. Expanding the time frame for scheduling warranty visits from two weeks to three months eliminated the inconvenience for customers who had busy schedules and found the time frame difficult to manage.

The business took a general, difficult-to-measure need (to improve homeowner warranty satisfaction) and developed specific, measurable, and actionable requirements to drive improvements in customer satisfaction.

Branding the "Circular Economy" Model for Millennials

Posted on

Last week, a friend and former client, Leszek Adamczyk, CEO of an innovative environmental software firm in Poland (ATMOTERM), sent me an enlightening article on how younger people in Europe are becoming more engaged in the "circular economy" model and adding fresh ideas for its growth. This article and additional research revealed three interesting insights that are relevant for all marketers. First, the importance of recognizing key global trends and their potential impact on society and business. Second, how the driving force from Millennials for a more sustainable environmental system represents an extraordinary opportunity to connect with them. And finally, how brand positioning principles can be applied to this circular economy model, like so many other worthwhile programs, to achieve broader adaptation and ensure its true benefits are delivered to society.

Millennials, the first digital generation, are very different from other market segments. Baby Boomers were accustomed to capitalizing on economic opportunities through consumption, investment, and competition, all bent on growth at any cost. However, Millennials are growing up in a world that is embarrassingly unequal, polluted, running out of resources, and with leadership they don't trust.

The concept of a circular economy is not new, although rapidly gaining in acceptance and respect today. The idea of circular material flows as a model for the economy was first presented in 1966 by Kenneth Boulding in his paper, "The Economy of the Coming Spaceship Earth". China added this in its five-year plan in 2006, and the EU Commission created a manifesto in 2012, based on a report from McKinsey on the economic and business opportunities from this restorative, circular model, which connected that: "In a world with growing pressures on resources and the environment, the EU has no choice but to go for the transition to a resource-efficient and ultimately regenerative circular economy ".

So what exactly is "circular economy"? Wikipedia defines it as "a generic term for an industrial economy that is, by design or intention, restorative … and in which material flows are designed to either reenter the biosphere or circulate at high quality without entering the biosphere". The goal is to generate more value and economic opportunity with less material and energy consumption (the rise of the "shared economy" with examples like Uber and Airbnb contribute to this). In other words, a circular economy is all about closing resource loops. Currently we extract resources at an ever increasing pace, and turn them into a product which is ultimately disposed. However, this approach is unsustainable on a global level. Instead, we need an economic system that is waste free and resilient in design to restore our ecosystems.

There are six principles that are essential for a successful circular economy (source: "Circle Economy", a membership organization in The Netherlands):

1. Materials – All materials are cycled infinitely
2. Energy – All energy is derived from renewable or otherwise sustainable sources
3. Ecosystem – Human activities support ecosystems and the rebuilding of natural capital
4. Value – Resources are used to …

What Everybody Ought to Know About Jewelry Appraisals

Posted on

For most of you, the thought of getting a Valuation or Appraisal on your Jewelry is NOT at the top of your list.

But it should be.

To often, clients assume that their Jewelry is either …

  • # Not Valuable enough to bother
  • # Covered by their Household insurance
  • # Safe on their Finger, so it won't get lost

All of these assumptions are WRONG and we cover some suggestions in our Insurance article (address given below) and the security pages under the Learning Section of the Online Appraisal Center.

If you are concerned about these matters and haven't had the chance to read them yet, we suggest you take a little side trip and cover the bases, soon as possible …

… Before the ring falls off the finger or the chain gets lost while swimming or the Diamond (was it a Diamond?) …

Get the Picture ..?

That's exactly What a Jewelry Appraisal Valuation Certificate is for.

Types of Jewelry Appraisal Valuations

The main type of Valuation or Appraisal we come across is the Valuation for Insurance. This is the one you would normally receive from your local Jeweler or Gemologist.

It is basically designed to cover you (through your insurance policy) against any loss or damage you may encounter.

It is designed to provide you, wherever possible, as near a REPLACEMENT OF A SIMILAR ARTICLE as possible.

It will include any taxes or duty plus the Jewelry Trade mark up.

What Are The Other Types of Valuations?

Other forms of Valuations are …

  • # Valuation for 'Private' Sale
  • # Valuation for an 'Auction' reserve
  • # Valuation for Probate
  • # Valuation for Division of an Estate (under conditions of a Will, for example)

Each of these types are simply a percentage of the 'Master Valuation' figure or Replacement for Insurance mentioned here.

The Master Valuation Appraisal

While these are covered briefly regarding their structure and use, you should remember that ALL of these valuations are just by-products of the Valuation Appraisals for Insurance, both in principle and procedures.

Therefore, with a little common sense and a child's school calculator, we can arrive at a final figure for any of the above situations.

After all – they need the SAME information to begin with.

If you had an Online Form which helped complete a Jewelry Appraisal for yourself, there would be no easier or quicker way to help in the majority of these cases, and you wouldn't even need a child's school calculator to complete it, because it would all be built into the Computer System.

Nice thought – but is it a reality?

Thankfully – Yes it is.

Jewelry Valuations For The Rest Of Us

While our advice is – and always has been – to get your Jewelry valued or appraised by your local, professional gemologist Valuer, it remains our belief that in the 'majority of cases' and taking into account the costs involved (your professional Valuer charges a reasonable fee for their skill and the work …

TomTom Spark Comparison – What's The Difference of Each Model?

Posted on

Wearable tech looks like a trend that won't be wearing out soon. Just recently, TomTom has released their new product range, the TomTom Spark. With multisport capabilities (running, cycling, pool swimming), activity tracking, built-in heart rate monitor, and music player, it maybe the all-in-one wearable tech most runners are looking for.

This latest upgrade sort of blends the TomTom Runner and the TomTom Multisport into one watch and adding the latest tech that are becoming a standard feature set for most fitness watches today. The TomTom Spark has some similar designs with previous TomTom watches but it's lighter and has slightly smaller screen. Its strap is also noticeably slimmer and lighter.

What makes a TomTom Spark sparkle from each model?

The TomTom Spark comes in four different models.

  1. Spark
  2. Spark Cardio
  3. Spark Music
  4. Spark Cardio + Musicâ € ‹

To make it easy to remember, all models have the same core features: GPS, multisport capability, and 24/7 activity tracking. Adding the term "Cardio" means you get the built-in HRM and Heart-Rate Training Zone feature while adding the term "Music" means you get the music playback capability and Audio Performance Feedback feature. The TomTom Spark Cardio + Music would then mean you get the built-in HRM, Heart-Rate Training Zone, music player, and Audio Performance Feedback along the core features.

A Note to Triathletes

One thing you do need to consider is that TomTom use the term "multisport" to mean it has pool swim, bike, run and freestyle modes. This is different from Garmin and Suunto where "multisport" mode means you can link multiple sports together to create a "multisport" and then press the lap button during a session to quickly transition from one sport to the next.

Known for being a leader in GPS technology, TomTom is one of the first GPS watch makers to integrate an optical heart rate monitor and a music player in one watch. Discover the Top 7 Lead Generation Methods for Your Business (And Understand Them)

Posted on

Just like the classic real estate industry question: "What are the TOP 3 most important features of any property?" (location, location, location) – the single most important fuel you'll ever create, buy or wish you had for your business is leads, leads, leads! Doesn't it make sense to know and understand the top 7 ways to generate leads?

Production Method # 1:

Direct Visual Impact. Impact? Really? Really! Unfortunately, when it comes to direct lead generation like it has been done for decades, most people get it wrong. It doesn't matter if it is a sign on the side of your vehicle, building or bandit signs, you must be direct, powerful and short with your message. Your colors must be bright and high contrast. Yellow and black signs work best, period. The sign area must be maximized so that letters are as big as possible. Become a sign sage – evaluate readability, placement and "attention factor" of every sign you see. Emulate the best of what you see.

Production Method # 2:

It is very important that you become hyper-aware of the power of coupons. You can easily make a business card that is also a coupon. When you do this, you are adding huge power to every card you give out. Can you put flyers on car windows? If you put a flyer on my windshield, it makes me want to meet you to give you a piece of my mind. When you put a valuable coupon the size of a business card just above my door handle in the window rubber, I will put it in my wallet – BIG difference!

Production Method # 3:

The US Post Office (USPS) is now offering delivery of an 8 "x 11" flyer for 16 cents per mail box. This is an amazing deal. It gets better. You can sell advertising on a flyer to other businesses that do not compete with you and cover your cost. Please understand, you can get 5,000 double sided color flyers that are plastic coated for about $ 400. You can see, with both sides available for ads (coupons) you'll have plenty of space to sell and at the same time, your ad (coupon) appears on a portion of the same flyer. This is endless free advertising in exchange for a little work. You could even make money while getting your ad for free!

Production Method # 4:

We all hate email SPAM, don't we? However, you may not realize that you have probably responded to a SPAM email at some time. From that email, you may have built trust in the person who sent you the original SPAM. SPAM is legal if you follow some simple rules – Google it. Major corporations use legal email SPAM. Most people don't realize that the SPAM law is actually the CAN-SPAM law (meaning you can spam as long as you follow a half dozen simple rules).

How can you do it so no one gets upset? Offer …

The Pros and Cons of the GROW Coaching Model

Posted on

It is uncertain who originally developed the GROW model but it is thought by some that it was developed by Graham Alexander but made popular by Sir John Whitmore.

For those new to coaching the GROW model does provide a very useful framework. By helping the coachee really identify what they want from the conversation it does help prevent it from becoming an aimless chat. If the goal is ‘SMARTend’ up you have a Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant goal with a Time Limit on it so both coach and coachee know exactly the direction the session should be going in.

This framework in also useful in a group coaching or even a business meeting context where the coach or facilitator at the outset can establish an overall common goal and for the session, then work through ‘where are now?’, options for the way forward and specific action.

But is this model always appropriate especially when working on a one to one basis helping your coachee make significant and sustainable change? Whilst of course it is good to have a sense of what the coachee wants from the conversation a good coach will often uncover other issues during the course of a coaching session and sticking rigidly to the initial goal may prevent the real issues to be tackled from surfacing.

Whilst the GROW model is intended to be flexible I have seen coaches focusing more on their ability to follow the model than just listen and follow the client. The Coactive coaching approach (see book Co-active Coaching by Laura Whitworth, Karen Kimsey-House, Henry Kimsey-House, Phillip Sandahl) is very different and it talks about ‘dancing in the moment’ with the client, listening carefully and using your intuition to just being with the client, following their energy and going where they want to go in the conversation.

The final stage of GROW is Way Forward in other words is the stage where the client identifies action to be taken. Whilst coaching is about taking a client forward not every session may result in specific action to be taken. If as coaches we are so intent on finding the action and focusing on the ‘doing’ we can overlook the importance of just raising a client’s awareness about who they are, what they are noticing, what they are feeling in other words ‘the being’.

I know of coaches who are so intent on getting their client to action that they fail to allow them to fully explore what is important to them and what their underlying issues are resulting in actions that their clients are not really committed to and rarely result in meaningful change. If the client spends sufficient time on ‘the being’ rather than ‘the doing’ then action will automatically fall out of the conversation and will be led by the client. And the way forward may simply be a commitment to go away and reflect further on some of the questions raised.

The advantage of the GROW coaching model in that …

A LED Strip Light Jewelry Display Can Wow Your Customers

Posted on

Let's face it. Selling great products is no longer enough to ensure success in business. Today's consumers are more discerning than ever when it comes to where they spend their money, and the simple fact is that virtually anything can be purchased online for a lower price. Thankfully, many consumers prefer a direct experience when buying goods, and they want to be able to see something in person before they buy. This certainly gives a bit of the advantage back to retailers, but without the right lighting, that advantage may not be enough. You may not think of an LED strip light jewelry display as an integral part of your jewelry store, but take the time to keep reading in order to learn why you should.

Most jewelry stores still rely on fluorescent or halogen lighting to highlight and accent their most prized pieces. While these lighting types do work in terms of providing illumination, they are anything but visually appealing. The lighting produced by these methods is not only too bright, but it is often incredibly tinted and hued. The key with any retail lighting, especially jewelry display lighting, is to provide the most natural and true lighting possible. You want consumers to look at your jewelry and see what it will look like when they wear it out of the store. LED strip light jewelry display lighting can make this a breeze.

LED lights naturally produce light that is far closer to the spectrum achieved by natural sunlight. This means that the eye will be naturally drawn to the light and will be able to easily see the finer details of the jewelry that you have on display. A quality LED strip light jewelry display can help make it easier for your consumers to see the highlights and accents of any piece in your collection, helping them make choices more easily and increasing the odds that they will want to purchase their items from you.

Lighting should always be as close to full spectrum, natural light as possible. Studies show that it makes people feel happier and healthier, and these lights are actually used to help people who experience mood problems during the darker months. LED strip light jewelry display cases simply give your consumers a better feeling and a better view. When everything in your shop is properly illuminated and displayed, consumers are much more likely to want to make a purchase. It helps, of course, that LED lights are the most eco-friendly and cost effective option on the market, but the biggest draw should really be the impact on your consumers.

It is unlikely that the economy will resolve overnight or that Internet competition will ever disappear, so this means that it is up to you to do what you can to increase sales. LED strip light jewelry display lighting is an affordable way to really help change a number of things about your business and the way that customers see it. Whether you want to …
