Proper Lighting For a Jewelry Store

Posted on

Proper store lighting can attract more customers to any establishment, help sell more product, and strengthen a store's image. Many designers argue that the most important element of a store's design may be its lighting. Unfortunately, lighting is often the most neglected component of store design.

When choosing the lighting for any store or display cases, here are a few ideas to keep in mind.

Ceiling Height : The height of a store's ceiling is one of the most important factors that goes into a plan for lighting a jewelry store in such a way that the merchandise looks spectacular. As the source of light moves farther away from the merchandise the power and intensity of the light diminishes. Stores with higher ceilings (over 9 ') face some challenges with lighting. Stores with ceiling that are taller either have to use more lights that are spaced closer together to illuminate a showcase or bring the light source closer by dropping down a track or using a pendant.

Color : The color of light is measure in Kelvin (temperature). The higher the temperature (Kelvin) reading the cooler the color of light and the lower the temperature the warmer the color. For example a light that is 3000K would be a warmer color and a light that is 4000K would be a cooler light. As the temperature of light gets too high (over 4200K) the color of the light begins to take on a blue quality. Lights that are in the 5500K to 6500K will look "blue" to the eye.

Bulb Life / Quality : How long a bulb is expected to last is based upon its "rated life". The better bulbs have a rated life in excess of 10,000 hours. The quality of a bulb can also be measured by its CRI (Color Rendition Index). The higher the CRI of a bulb the better the quality of the light that it projects will be. CRI numbers over 80 signify a very high quality of light. CRI numbers over 90 signify an exemplary quality of light.

Power of Light : The power of a bulb is measured in lumens. The amount of light that is generated is measured in Lux or, more commonly, in foot-candles ("fc"). The higher the lumens the higher the amount of foot-candles that will be generated by the bulb.

Different Light Sources : There are three main sources of light that are used in Jewelry stores. They are (1) Ceramic Metal Halide (2) Halogen (3) Fluorescent. LED technology is being used more and more but is still far behind the main three. The best source of lighting for jewelry is still Ceramic Metal Halide. This is due to its qualities. They are energy efficient, powerful (lumens over 6000), come in warm and cool colors (3000K to 4200K) has excellent CRI (over 80 and in most cases over 90 CRI) and can provide foot-candles that can exceed 400. Halogens are hot, have lower CRI's, do not maintain their color …

Benefits of Getting a Product on Home Shopping Channels

Posted on

Getting a product on QVC (or getting a product on HSN or other home shopping networks) is a goal for many companies and / or inventors. In fact, for many companies or products, it's one of the biggest steps they can take.

But why is this so? Especially in this day and age of mass media and websites, where something like television is seemingly diminished. Why is it such an overriding goal to be on home shopping channels?

The answers are several, and I'll go over a few huge benefits to getting your product on TV.

The first benefit, obviously, is massive exposure. QVC, HSN, and other home shopping networks comprise some of the largest television networks on the planet, and have an eager, enthusiastic audience. While much commercial television has seen a steep decline over the past decade, the home shopping networks remain both relevant and strong. Their audiences have favorite hosts, favorite product types, and are regular viewers. And most importantly, they have money to spend.

The second benefit is a huge influx of sales. This huge audience that the home shopping networks command is an audience that buys. Hundreds or (even thousands) of sales per segment are quite common. In fact, there's no single sales tool quite as effective as a slot on a home shopping channel (plus, don't forget that all the home shopping networks have massive websites as well, and do online marketing quite well – I just got a " check out these offers "e-mail from QVC as I'm typing this.)

Another side benefit to all of this exposure is being seen by specific, important people – like buyers for chains. Don't think for one minute that buyers from retail chains aren't watching home shopping channels. They are watching, and this often gives them insight on not only new products, but also what type of products audiences respond to best. Getting your product into a retail chain can be hard, but if you are on QVC (et al) first, it becomes a lot easier.

So we have exposure and sales, the two most important aspects to most companies. What else is there? How about a chance to hone your own sales skills and pitch? When YOU are on camera, you are doing the selling (with help from the host, of course). But this really lets you show your sales chops, and your enthusiasm for your product. I realize not everyone will embrace this part, but for a certain type of entrepreneur, this kind of selling can be invaluable.

To wrap this up, the simple premise is this: Getting a product on TV can be richly rewarding, in more ways than one.

Who Wears a Wedding Ring on the Right Hand?

Posted on

There are a number of countries in the world who actually wear their wedding rings on their right hands. For example Greek Orthodox members who get married wear their rings on their right hands after they get married, and prior to getting married they will wear it on the left.

There are many other countries who wear their wedding rings on their right fingers: Norway, Portugal, Spain, some of the countries which made up the former Yugoslavia such as Serbia and Croatia, Russia, the Ukraine, Norway, Bulgaria, Poland Austria, Denmark , Germany, and of course Greece. All of these have very widespread practices, except for Roman Catholics, who do the opposite. In Belgium (at least within the Dutch speaking part) you will wear a it on the left hand, but in the rest of the country, it is typically the right.

In a traditional Jewish ceremony, the groom will place the ring on the bride's index finger, and not the ring finger of either hand at all. Today the ring is often transferred from the index finger to the ring finger after the ceremony (especially in the West), and most Jewish grooms also wear a wedding ring. The reason that Jews use the index finger, is that they believed that it was the most important finger.

Indian brides are also quite confused as to which finger they are to wear the ring on. According to Indian culture, the left hand is less important than the right. But many will wear the ring on the left anyway.

The Importance Of Women's Safety

Posted on

Women's safety has been an ongoing issue ever since the first woman appeared on the face of the earth. Some of this is due to the differences in strength between men and women. In most cases, a man has the ability to overpower a woman, but there is more to the safety of women than that. Lack of values and opportunity also play a role in situations involving emotional, mental and bodily harm to women are involved.

Women should never feel that they are at fault for someone else's actions. This is why it is so important that all women are offered training in ways to protect themselves and ensure their safety.

Available Options

Today's woman has numerous options available to them to help keep them safe. Products like stun guns have been on the market as self-defense weapons for 25 years. It is not unusual to hear people say that having the most powerful weapon is the best defense a woman could have, and that may explain why high voltage stun guns have some popularity.

Truthfully, it isn't the high voltage that stops perpetrators in their track; It is the appropriate amperage that does that. The thing is that not everyone knows that just a single amp has enough power to kill a human. This is the reasoning behind the creation of stun guns that only carry 5 to 8 milliamps. This is more than enough to incapacitate attackers long enough for a woman to escape. This is preferable to causing lasting injury or death.

Women have a number of weapons available to keep them safe today. Pepper spray is sometimes recommended for those who spend time walking long apartment building halls or empty parking lots. These days, keeping women safe may involve more than carrying keys splayed in fingers, and a weapon kept in the purse may be hard to get to when you need it.

What Experts Believe

Women's safety experts often advise women to become well versed in tactics intended to help prevent them from ending up victims of attack. Their recommendations typically include taking self-defense classes, but that is not always sufficient. In reality, one must add layers of defense to their system of protection and gain a level of confidence in the use of each. This still may not be enough.

Women's safety is dependent upon a number of different factors. Although it is desirable to have in mind what you will do when an attack is imminent, there are no guarantees that these tactics alone will fend off attackers. Traveling in pairs or groups is the number one way to ensure a woman can be safe. Since most attacks occur to women who are alone having someone with you to help just makes sense.

Careful planning is required if women are going to remain safe at all times and planning for all contingencies is always a good idea.

1940's Women's Fashion Inventions

Posted on

1940's Women's fashion was a time of great restrictions on design, fabric, and trim materials. The war forced clothing designs to be simple yet it also forced manufactures to be creative with what they could use and invent new materials. The 1940's brought about new women's fashion inventions many of which are still around today.

  1. The girdle. Prior to the 1940's a women's shape was made by metal boned corsets. In the 1940's the girdle was invented as a form of tummy tuck underwear. It shaped just the middle down to the hips and created the smooth hourglass silhouette associated with vintage fashions. The girdle was uncomfortable and was eventually replaced by nylons or no shaping undergarment at all. Today the girdle returns with body shapers, control top stockings, control top underwear and other suck and smooth foundation garments. They name may have changed but these garments are just updated girdles in disguise.
  2. Wedge shoes. Leather and wood was needed for the war so shoe designs had to get creative. The solution was cork. A cork sole was used for shoe heels and then wrapped in a pretty fabric, mesh or even reptile skin. It was economical and allowed a taller heel then what was considered a safe heeled pump. Today wedgies come in and out of fashion, particularly in summer, when wedge sandals hit the beaches.
  3. Rayon . If you didn't know, Rayon is a synthetic fabric. It was invented and became very popular in the 1940's. Up till then wool, silk, and cotton was what clothing was made of. Silk and cotton were needed for the war so Rayon was used instead. It could be lightweight like silk or heavy like wool. Today rayon is still used in fine fabrics, especially in summer.
  4. Nylons . Prior to the 40's women's stockings were made of silk. They were very delicate and needed frequent mending and hand washing. Dupont then invented nylon and thus "Nylons" became a brand name for stockings. Today nylon is still used to make all kinds of hosiery and fabrics.
  5. The Zipper. Thanks to new inventions of the 1940's women can zip up clothing instead of using buttons, snaps or lacing.
  6. Plastic. Although various forms of plastic had been around since the 1920's it was not until the 1940's that they really took center stage in the fashion world. Jewelry was made of Bakelite plastic in big colorful designs. Handbags, makeup case, and household items were being made of Lucite. You may not recognize these plastic names but I am sure you are aware that plastic is everywhere in fashion- from cute barrettes to zippers to purse handles.
  7. Shoulder pads. You may think that the 1980's were the first decade to use shoulder bags. They actually go back much farther than the 1940's but as a regular fashion accessory for women the 1940's were the first. They used shoulder pads in dresses, jackets, and blouses in order to square off the shoulder for a boxy military

Hot Dog Stand Recipe – You Can Make Yummy Stadium Style Hot Dogs Right at Home

Posted on

I made hot dogs the same way pretty much for years. They were always okay, but nothing to brag about. I think maybe in the back of my mind, the lowly wiener was just not important enough to warrant creative input from my imaginative culinary side. Then one day, I decided to try something different.

As a youngster, I was taught to boil the wiener in water, put it in a bun, and squirt various condiments on top. But as I grew and advanced in culinary skills, I knew there had to be a way to improve on this method of cooking a hot dog.

Things that go great with hot dogs are: potato chips, baked beans, coleslaw, or potato salad.

This method of cooking the lowly wiener is now a regular thing around my house. My family loves them, and they really are good. Here's what you'll need:

* All beef wieners (you can eat that other "stuff" if you want, we only eat beef wieners; we also prefer bun length)
* Soft buns (you want fresh buns here, not stale, although you can steam stale buns back to life if you insist on using old bread – I have other uses for old bread such as Bread Pudding with Amaretto Sauce)
* Hot dog relish
* Sauerkraut
* Diced onions
* Mustard and ketchup
* Kraft shredded mexican style four cheese blend
* Hot dog chili sauce (Castleberry's is our favorite)
* Laura's homemade cole slaw
* Butter
* Tin foil
* Crock-pot
* Cast iron skillet

Now, you do not have to do everything the same way I do it. I am letting everyone know how I do it, and you can adjust as you see fit.

Please note the hot dogs need to spend some time in the crock-pot in order to be good, and the steaming method I mention below is great. Plan properly so the dog packets get to warm and meld inside their "packet" in the hot crock-pot. I usually make the dogs and allow them 45 minutes to an hour in the crock.

  1. About an hour before dinner, turn the crock-pot on low and let it get warm.
  2. Heat up the iron skillet, and add a tablespoon of butter.
  3. Fry the beef wieners in the iron skillet.
  4. When they have a good "fry" on the outside, sort of like you get if you grill them, remove and place inside of a fresh non-stale soft bun (I am very particular about my bread being soft and fresh)
  5. Immediately wrap the assembled bun and wiener in tin foil, sealing all edges.
  6. Place in crock-pot.
  7. Repeat with remaining buns and wieners.
  8. Cover the crock-pot and leave it alone.
  9. Heat up the chili in the microwave or on the stove.
  10. Prepare the other condiments.
  11. Get everything on the table, including drinks, chips, dip, whatever.
  12. Then get out one assembled dog at a time for each diner, keeping the rest in the crock-pot with lid on to
