Couple celebrates 70th wedding anniversary after overcoming COVID-19

A Pittsburgh-area couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary after they both beat COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus.

Steve and Marie Orlando, ages 92 and 89, respectively, got married on Sept. 2, 1950, in Pittsburgh, just one year after meeting when Steve played on the same sandlot football team as Marie’s brother.

When they wed, Marie had just graduated from high school the prior year and Steve had just ended two years of duty in the U.S. Army.

The couple, who settled in a Pittsburgh suburb, had plans to celebrate their 70th anniversary this year with their six children, 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, but the coronavirus pandemic threw off their plans.

The Orlandos, who live close to four of their children, isolated themselves in the home they’ve shared for more than 30 years beginning in March, when the pandemic began to spread in the U.S.

“We were stuck in the house,” Marie told “Good Morning America.” “Our daughters would go shopping for us and cook for us and leave things [at the door].”

When Marie had to go in the hospital in July for a heart valve replacement surgery, one of the Orlandos’ daughters, Janet Bartley, went with her.

They later both tested positive for coronavirus, along with Steve and Bartley’s family as well.

“It was our worst fear that they would get it,” Bartley said. “And then we all did.”

Steve was hospitalized for two days due to dehydration but otherwise all family members, including Marie, had mild symptoms and were able to recover, a miracle given the Orlandos’ age, according to the family. People age 60 and older are at high risk of complications from COVID-19, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“Thank God we got through it for our age,” said Marie. “I just feel sorry for a lot of people our age who didn’t make it.”

Because they were still recovering from the virus, the Orlandos had to wait until more than one month after their anniversary to celebrate.

Steve, a plumber, and Marie, a homemaker, were celebrated last Saturday at a small party with family members.

Their six children, who live in the Pittsburgh area as well as Florida and Texas, credit their parents with showing them what it takes to have a long and happy marriage.

‘This day is not one we’ll be forgetting’: Syrian refugee family opening clothing shop on first anniversary in Canada

Posted on

As his family’s one-year anniversary in Canada approaches, Ammar Hud Hud is reeling with excitement.

Not only does Oct. 30 mark a year since he and his family landed in Canada as sponsored refugees, it will also be the grand opening of his brick-and-mortar women’s clothing and tailor shop in Nova Scotia.

Ammar’s Apparel is located at 9B Pottery Lane in Antigonish.

“It’s a really, really good feeling. We are very happy,” Hud Hud told The Chronicle Herald through an interpreter.

“This day is not one we’ll be forgetting.”

In 2012, Hud Hud, his wife, Kinaz Albaghada, and their two children, Samy and Esraa Hud Hud, fled Syria, where they lost their home and a successful clothing factory. They stayed in Jordan for half a year and Egypt for seven years.

They then came to Nova Scotia, joining their relatives, Tareq Hadhad and his family in Antigonish. Hadhad is the successful entrepreneur behind Peace by Chocolate.

With the support of the community, Hud Hud, who has 30 years of experience working as a tailor in Syria, returned to his passion in April and launched his online shop.

At that time, he said he expected to focus solely on designing women’s clothing and offering tailoring services. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Hud Hud shifted his focus to designing masks to keep Nova Scotians protected from the virus.

Over the course of the pandemic, Hud Hud and his family have made more than 1,000 masks. They celebrated Canada Day by selling masks featuring the Canadian flag on them to people all over the country.

Since then, Hud Hud said, he has remained busy tending to customer orders over Facebook and has had his sights set on opening a physical store in an effort to “contribute to (Antigonish) and our new country in these challenging times.”

With that dream finally becoming a reality, Hud Hud said he feels “very grateful and thankful.”

“When I lost my factory, I never imagined I was going to restart my life, especially in Canada. So this moment will be the biggest moment for my life, because I am restarting my business and restarting my life after I lost it.”

At the new shop, Hud Hud will sell casual clothing, athletic wear and pyjamas for women, in addition to masks. He will also take tailoring requests from customers.

Hud Hud said he wants to give back to the community by helping people find clothing that suits them, and he eventually hopes to hire more people to work at Ammar’s Apparel.

“I am very excited to open my shop in Antigonish (for) the people who welcomed me and opened their arms for me to help me settle in Canada,” he said.

Ammar’s Apparel’s grand opening event will start at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 30. Hud Hud will be cutting a red ribbon to mark the occasion, and the shop will be open from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for customers to come and browse, with a limit on attendants

Lunisol Guzman was the head of her Newark household, with three children and a full-time job driving a bus.

Ismael Lugo Jr. was the father of two, retired from the Air Force and a longtime employee of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, where he managed a warehouse filled with case files.

They met more than 10 years ago, through a mutual friend, and fell in love. There were shared family gatherings, several trips to the Caribbean — and, in recent years, a lifelong commitment to raising a little boy and girl whom Guzman had fostered and later adopted.

The couple were married in August 2019, but they would never get the chance to celebrate their first wedding anniversary. Lugo died on April 11 at the age of 48 and his wife died less than a month later, on May 7, at age 50. She never knew he had died.

Now, her grown daughters are caring for the children —  Zavion, 4, and Jazzmyn, 2 — as their mother would have wanted.

“We want to raise them together,’’ said Katherine, who lives in Elizabeth with Jazzmyn, while her sister lives with Zavion in Newark, about 10 minutes away.  “Maybe in the future we will get a two-family property.”

The adoptions weren’t a surprise for the couple’s family. After all, Guzman and Lugo loved children and were known to guide and help those in need.

“His heart was too big for a lot of people, he cared a lot,’’ said his daughter, Nephetina Lugo, of Burlington. “And she cared a lot about her family. I didn’t have a mother figure while growing up, and she was probably the very first woman to show me what a mom was like.”

Lugo was born in Brooklyn, the child of Puerto Rican parents with some Italian ancestry as well. He served as a lieutenant colonel of the Air Force Civil Air Patrol for more than two decades. He also was employed by the Prosecutor’s Office for 30 years.

Nephetina said he was a loving dad, whom she could always depend on when she needed him, even though they could clash at times. He also had a 13-year-old son, Giovanni.

Loved and Lost: Lucy Sarappo was fiercely independent with a generous side

Loved and Lost: Dr. James Albert Wilson, pioneering Dominican doctor, was proof of power of books

Lugo was a model train builder who had a room in the house devoted to his trains, she said. He also enjoyed cooking and organizing get-togethers, where he served a mix of food representing his roots. Sometimes there would be arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas) and a side of pasta,

Kristen Bell & Dax Shepard Both Forgot Their Wedding Anniversary!

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are celebrating seven years of wedded bliss! Well, kind of.

The 40-year-old The Good Place actress took to Instagram on Monday (October 19) to reveal that both she and the 45-year-old Parenthood actor both forgot their wedding anniversary, which was on Saturday, October 17.

“Well, it’s that time of year again. The anniversary of the day each year when we say to each other ‘wasn’t our anniversary last week at some point?’” Kristen captioned the below selfie. “I love you, @daxshepard, and I always will.”

Kristen and Dax tied the knot in a super low-key courthouse ceremony back in October 17, 2013. They share two daughters: Lincoln, 7, and Delta, 5.

Last week, Kristen opened up about standing by Dax after he recently revealed he relapsed after 16 years of sobriety.

Kristen Bell says her husband Dax Shepard is “doing really great” following his recent relapse after 16 years of sobriety.

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are celebrating a milestone — a forgotten anniversary.

The “Frozen” star took to Instagram Monday and shared a cute selfie of her and her husband to commemorate their seventh wedding anniversary, albeit a few days late.

“Well, it’s that time of year again. The anniversary of the day each year when we say to each other ‘wasn’t our anniversary last week at some point?’ ” Bell, captioned the post. “I love you, @daxshepard, and I always will.”

The couple, who got married in 2013, are notorious for forgetting details about their marriage.

Last year, Bell confessed in an Instagram tribute to her husband that neither of them can remember their anniversary date, which they think happened “at some point last week.”

“We were reminded by family and friends that at some point last week, it was our 5 year wedding anniversary,” she wrote, captioning a photo of Shepard with his arm around her. “In truth, neither of us remember which day. Thats because we have been living the celebration of our commitment every moment since.”

Bell’s anniversary post comes almost a month after Shepard revealed he was recovering from a relapse after 16 years of sobriety.

Shepard shared on the Sept. 25 episode of his “Armchair Expert” podcast in a no-holds-barred conversation that he had recently relapsed and wanted to be honest about his journey in order to help others who may be struggling with addiction.

In the episode, which was recorded Sept. 21, Shepard, who previously struggled with alcohol addiction and other drugs, explained he had previously taken prescription pain pills due to injuries from riding his motorcycle. But “for the last eight weeks maybe” he’d been “on them all day.”

Last week Bell said her husband was “doing really great.”

“Everybody’s up against their own demon,” Bell said on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” “Sometimes it’s anxiety and depression, sometimes it’s substance abuse. The thing I love most about Dax is… that he was able to tell me and tell us and say ‘we need a different plan.’ “

Kristen Bell is commemorating a time when she and husband Dax Shepard forgot about their wedding anniversary.

In an Instagram post on Monday, the Good Place star, 40, celebrated their marriage milestone by joking about how they always seem to forget the actual date of their anniversary.

“Well, it’s that time of year again. The anniversary of the day each year when we say to each other ‘wasn’t our anniversary last week at some point?’ ” Bell wrote alongside a photo of herself cozied up next to Shepard, 45.

“I love you, @daxshepard, and I always will,” she continued in the caption.

The couple — who share daughters Delta, 5, and Lincoln, 7 — married on Oct. 17, 2013. However, as Bell previously noted, the two still have trouble remembering the specific date.

“We were reminded by family and friends that at some point last week, it was our 5 year wedding anniversary. In truth, neither of us remember which day. Thats because we have been living the celebration of our commitment every moment since,” she wrote in last year’s tribute, before correcting herself in the comments section that she and Shepard have actually been married for six years.

“I find when you are living with gratitude each moment, the dates become irrelevant,” Bell continued in the post. “To get to wake up next to someone who has put hard work, respectful fights, patience, understanding and gratitude into your relationship is the definition of love.”

“I will never remember the date of our anniversary @daxshepard, and i know you wont either. And thats just one more thing i love about us,” she added.

In a second Instagram, the Veronica Mars alum posted a photo of the parents of two kissing after learning it was in fact their anniversary — as witnessed by their dog Frank.

“Here’s the morning we both got texts from grandma saying ‘happy anniversary!’ ” Bell wrote. “We were both on our way out the door but stopped for a quick hot and heavy make out sesh while Frank stood close like a creeper.”

The couple, who began dating in 2007, previously spoke to PEOPLE about their decade-long relationship, sharing that their years together have been filled with ups and downs.

“We definitely had to work really hard at being a couple because we’re both incredibly, painfully stubborn, and we’re pretty much opposites,” Shepard said in March 2019.

LAS CRUCES – Kermit and Phyllis Schauer celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on Oct. 16. They recently reminisced on their life together, from North Dakota to Las Cruces and many places in between.

Phyllis and Kermit each grew up on small farms in North Dakota. They met in school in Streeter, North Dakota, but they knew of each other before because the town was so small.

“We started seeing each other during the Christmas break in 1950. After a basketball game, Kermit asked if he could take me home, and I went with him. And from that time on we were seeing each other, writing to each other,” Phyllis said. “Not always in the same town so it was difficult sometimes to see one another but, we wanted to be with each other so it kind of grew from there. “

MoreHow has the pandemic altered dating?: Survey says more roommates are hooking up

Kermit later went off to serve in the Korean War and Phyllis went to college. But while they were apart, they wrote letters to each other. The couple married in 1955 and had five children. They now have nine grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren with a fifth on the way.

Headed south

Curiosity seemed to be part of the intrigue of New Mexico. “I’m a Korean War veteran and a lot of the people I served with were from the Southwest. And so, I wanted to come down and see the place,” Kermit said.

Gail Schauer, the couple’s daughter, said when her parents got here, her father told her he wished they had moved sooner.

She said the family used to pack up and go on trips all together. Phyllis said they have been to most of the states west of the Mississippi, and quite a few to the east. So, moving to New Mexico was not their first venture south of North Dakota.

“I remember that it was I think usually Christmas, we would pack up the whole family, my mom and dad and whether it was four or five kids, however many they had at the time, and we would travel,” Gail said. “When we lived in North Dakota, we would go it seemed like to me we kept going further south every Christmas. First it was South Dakota, then Nebraska, then Kansas and every Christmas we’d go a little further south. Until I remember one Christmas, we came all the way down to New Mexico and we had Christmas in New Mexico with no snow. The strangest thing ever.”

Involved in the community

Kermit worked as a certified public accountant (CPA) with his own accounting practice in North Dakota.
