Fashion – Here Today, Gone Tomorrow or Sticking Around

Posted on

Help! You scream as the change of another season comes and there is the newspaper headline – Real Trends for Real Women – and it has the top 10 trends for the coming season. Only 10, you think sarcastically. You read on and there is an eleventh one in there as well as five more fashion trends in another article in the newspaper supplement.

No wonder you are confused about what to buy to feel modern and look good without converting your spare bedroom into a giant walk-in wardrobe.

Here is my no-nonsense guide to help business and professional women over 40 interpret new season fashion trends.

Do Not Believe All the Words

These types of articles often tell us to forget fads and unwearable runway trends. Ten seems to be a favourite number. So off they go to find examples of how to interpret their chosen trends for the coming season. Sounds helpful but in order to get ten of them they mix trends with fads and classics.

A fad is a short-lived, one-season fashion or colour that suits only a limited number of women. It is definitely aimed at the young and slim or women who can wear that season’s particular colour.

A trend is a fashion or colour that looks good on most women and stays around for one to three years. It changes from a fad to a trend in its second year.

When a fashion suits every woman and can be interpreted in many different variations, it becomes a modern classic like crossover styles. These are the modern dressing skills that every business and professional woman needs to learn.

Fashion writers prefer to call most fashion ideas trends rather than fads because women will buy a trend. We convince ourselves that it is a good financial buy because everyone is wearing it. When someone close to you asks you why on earth you bought that, you can reply that you will get lots of wear out of it as it is a modern and trendy.

Go Beyond the Hype

When you see and read these articles, be critical and go beyond the hype. If there is a colour of the season eg gold, it is because gold is a colour that those with warm colouring can wear well. Choose carefully – gold skinny jeans are a fad whilst gold accessories are a classic look that suits most women.

Ask yourself these two questions. Will I be happy wearing this next year and the year after? Are the women whose fashion sense I admire wearing this?’ If you can answer yes, to both questions, buy them. If you answer no, put them back. Life is too short to waste money on clothes with no real value. You want versatility so you can wear the new item with a number of other clothes currently in your wardrobe.

Find the Real Treasures

The real fashion treasures are not fads or trends. They are modern classics …

The Middle Age Women of Today

Posted on

Up until this point, life has probably been about taking caring of and making everyone else happy. You have been putting everything into making your marriage successful, and you have poured your energies into making a happy home for your children.

At some point, you've put your career on hold for the benefit of others, and you have had to make decisions that you did serve your happiness. It is part and parcel of your existence, and that's just the way it is for many women.

There's no better time than now to take control of life and start doing more for yourself than now.

Doing More for Yourself

You're at midlife, enthusiastic, flourishing, and ready to tackle life. It's time to kiss guilt goodbye, and embrace what you love. It's time to do something new, whether you want to learn a new language, how to play the piano, or you have always wanted to learn how to dance the waltz.

Your midyears are the perfect time to step outside your comfort zone and throw yourself into something new.

It's time to embrace your confidence!

There's nothing sexier than the confidence that life experience brings. While aging might sound scary, living in fear will hold you back from living a full life. So, keep moving forward, learn every day, and listen to your heart.

Don't be afraid to be bold, present, brave, and fearless.

"Once you become fearless life becomes limitless."

Hobbies Make the Woman

Whether your interests are in arts, sports, in the home, on the water, or in the gym, you should feel free to dive in headfirst. You can take up a hobby that allows you to socialize with others, or to enjoy time on your own. They can be as cheap or as expensive as you want them to be, and they will help shape your lifestyle, and connect you with likeminded people, and energize you.

When it comes to hobbies for women in midlife, there is no limit. From book clubs, painting, gardening, golfing, and sewing to swimming, dancing, or jazzercise, playing an instrument, and calligraphy, whatever your point of interest, there is a hobby that will bring out the best in you and give you new meaning .

Finding a hobby that you love and that provides you with social engagement is vital to your mental health and overall happiness, especially if you don't get to experience a lot of socializing with your family and friends.

Letting Go of What Matters Less

Saying Goodbye to Judgements

Remember when you were young and you would get dressed thinking about what others may think of your outfit? Versus now, when chances are you aren't too worried about what other people think of how you are dressed or what you are wearing, you're concerned much more with whether you like it or how you feel in it. This is so liberating, a new mindset where you dress and how you look aims to satisfy you and promotes …

Is a Walking Cane a Fashion Statement Today?

Posted on

Walking canes are actually a stick for whoever needs better support when they are on their feet. It can be in all kinds of designs and shapes. I’ve been watching a lot of Japanese cartoons base on the Old England around the 18th to 19th century, I saw the characters the comic artist created their characters with walking canes. I wonder is cane a fashion statement today or it has been outdated?

On the streets you pass every day, the places you go; do you see anybody with a cane? Canes are usually for the elderly because they need a better balance when they walk or stand. After a few tests, walking canes slowly improved into different styles they gives better lifestyle to the elderly. However, some of the senior citizens don’t hold a cane for the sake of balancing or supporting. It’s to show their professionalism. Some canes are designed elegantly and stylish. These slick canes are branded and they can be very pricey.

In the Old England times, canes are able to present one’s status but now, the modern society doesn’t continue this tradition anymore. I can’t say it has been outdated or it’s now an ‘in’ thing to have walking sticks with you. In Japan, Japanese comics or cartoon fans will organize events often. On weekends, you may notice people dress up in bizarre clothes, mostly teenagers. To them, it’s a tradition called Cosplay. As I mentioned above, there are Japanese comics and cartoons base on the Old England times, so it’s a trend for anybody who cosplays as the characters of the origin.

I may agree that it has been outdated either. Have you ever heard of a company, Comoy’s of London? It established since 18th century but now they have stopped producing walking canes like before. This proves that these canes are no longer in the market and it has been forgotten as a fashion statement. Although these sticks are no longer a trend, there are still websites which sell exotic walking canes. I searched on the Internet on canes for fashion and found out that they are selling the cane of the main character from the famous medical-based TV series, House. Is this a sign that canes are back to the fashion world?

Canes are commonly assembled in a technical way rather than a fashionable manner. As the elderly needs support, some canes have larger bases, so-called crutches. Other than that, we have hiking sticks for better grip so we won’t fall and roll down the hill. For convenience, these sticks have been modified into foldable sticks. It’s easier to keep and it’s lighter than wooden walking canes due to its material. Again, in the Old England times, some may possess a cane with a sword hidden in it and the cane as its sheath. Isn’t it wonderful?

Canes are very useful in terms of its functions; they can be classy in terms of fashion sense. My opinion is, it’s a fashion statement today …

The Women in Professional Bass Fishing Today – Where Are They?

Posted on

I had surgery last week and couldn't fish or drive, so I was working on the website and talking to some friends on Facebook while watching some live tournament coverage, and the subject of why we don't see many women fishing in professional bass events came up.

It really made me think because I hadn't paid as much attention to this as I should have.

I decided to contact some old friends in professional bass fishing both male and female and get their thoughts on it, and I think you'll be surprised at what some of them said.

First, in case you weren't aware it, women haven't always been allowed to fish BASS events.

The first woman to compete in a co-ed BASS tournament was Vojai Reed. She fished the 1991 Missouri Invitational and finished 58th! not bad, but it wasn't anything to indicate that women were going to win a lot of Bassmaster Angler of the Year awards or start taking home Bassmaster Classic trophies.

And as of 2018, they haven't!

I had a tackle store, guide service, and a radio show at the very beginning of the internet.

I had been involved in the old Redman Tour where I met a lot of anglers who are fishing at a professional level today, and I had opened Bass Pro shops in Harrisburg, Pa where I did seminars for TTI Blackmore, allowing me to associate with a lot of professionals in bass fishing. I contacted Andre Moore, who had Reaction Innovations and started carrying his baits, and interviewing him on the radio shows.I was at the Classic when he proposed to Kim Bain on stage.

I thought, how perfect is this, a team like that fishing the Classics together, she will go far.

Kim Bain-Moore was the first woman to compete in the Bassmaster Classic. She qualified by winning the 2008 Women's Bassmaster Tour Angler of the Year title. In the Classic, she finished 47th out of 51 anglers. It was her first and last!

Pam Martin-Wells became the second woman to fish the Classic. Like Kim Bain-Moore, she qualified after winning the 2009 WBT AOY award. She finished 22nd out of 51 anglers in the Classic. Pam Martin-Wells is easily the most accomplished female angler in BASS history. Martin-Wells ranks 123rd on the BASS all-time prize money list with $ 308,321.14. Ninety-nine percent of that was earned through the WBT or in her one and only Classic appearance.

After the dissolution of the WBT in 2011 no woman has even come close to qualifying for the championship.

Janet Parker came pretty close to qualifying for the Elites in 2011.

Sabrina Thompson was profiled a while back on a local news station in Texas, she is a Pro Angler and was participating in that weekend's Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Opens.

So why is that a big deal?

She was the first black woman ever to compete in the bass fishing tournament.

She serves as the Vice President of the …

Fashion Yesterday and Today

We are living in a world surrounded by numerous things that are either related to the technology, the latest gadgets or the latest fashion. And Fashion today has made its significance felt in almost all sectors of life. Fashion can be termed into two groups: One group which follows fashion trends and adopts them and the other group who create fashion and style statements for the others to follow them. It can also be extended to another set of people who rarely have anything to do with fashion trends but yet follow their own style to create their own unique personality; adding one more style to the fashion world.

Fashion is not just about cosmetics and make up or the hair-do. It is a sense of creating the charisma of looking good in anything you wear and this magic is created with the right kind of accessories going along with the foot wear and the clothes, making up a pleasant picture to view. Many a times, people who do not afford to buy expensive clothes look their best in their casual wear, just by presenting themselves in that manner of sophistication and creating an aura around them with the confidence of looking good.

There are myriad forms of fashion, and trends keep on changing with the seasons. From the early 60s and 70s to the present millennium, there has been an immense change in the forms, looks and thoughts about fashion trends.

In India, much of fashion has been influenced by the Hindi Film Industry, popularly called Bollywood. The trends that have changed through time can be fairly seen in the movies made during the 60s and 70s and how they have evolved in various forms bringing about a style that can be followed by the general public. People have aped the west from very early times and this was no exception. The clothes made in the 60s and 70s were very much influenced by the western countries and given a traditional touch. The Bell Bottoms, scarves and the hair style was very much prevalent in those days as an icon of style. Later in the 80s and 90s, Fashion world sizzled like never before. There was a craving by the people to look different, stylish and modern and this could be seen in their outlook towards their outfit, new styles of hair, makeup, accessories like purses, earrings, necklaces, matching footwear etc.

People were conscious about each and every new thing that was marketed and they copied the styles from their Bollywood idols. Bollywood started as a platform for theatre artistes and went on to become a commercial entry to the youths and aspirants for a career in the film and fashion industry. This gave the youth of today to emphasize on the fashion world. Art and music have become an inseparable thing of the past and so it is deeply rooted in the present as well with more features and facilities.

Today fashion, art, music, designers, dance etc all …
