Covid-19: Gap struggles with out-of-fashion styles, to close stores in some European countries after lockdown slump – fashion and trends

Posted on

Gap Inc is considering closing stores in some European countries, as the apparel retailer looks to save cash while dealing with a sales slump brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and competition from fast-fashion companies.

The San Francisco-based company, which had 129 Gap brand stores in Europe at the end of July, said late on Tuesday options being explored include the possible closure of outlets in the United Kingdom, France, Ireland and Italy by mid-2021.

The move comes as Gap struggles with out-of-fashion styles, which has pushed shoppers towards apparel brands like Zara and H&M. The coronavirus crisis has compounded troubles by stifling sales at brick-and-mortar sales across the globe.

However, online sales of Gap Inc’s Old Navy and Athleta brands have surged since the start of the pandemic.

The company also said it was reviewing its warehouse and distribution model and its Gap and Banana Republic-owned e-commerce operations in Europe.

Parts of Gap’s European business could be transferred to third parties in a partnership model, the company said.

Earlier this year, Gap said it planned to close over 225 unprofitable Gap and Banana Republic stores globally as a part of a restructuring plan.

Trends you can DIY on the cheap without shopping

If you have become obsessed with tidying up and getting rid of old clothes thanks to Marie Kondo’s technique just like the rest of the country, chances are you have a pile of items you wanna get rid of. Susana Victoria Perez has more.

Are you guilty of excessive online shopping during the pandemic? You’re not the only one.

While stores have largely reopened amid the pandemic, many consumers are still opting to shop from home. According to a new survey from PYMNTS, a business-to-business platform specializing in payments and commerce, nearly 36% of U.S. consumers are buying retail goods online as of May 23 – up from 29% in mid-April, when few shops were open.

If you’re looking to treat yourself to a few new looks but trying to save money, put down your credit card and work with your existing wardrobe. Chances are, you have a lot of neglected clothes in your closet.

Here are seven easy and affordable fashion hacks to transform clothes you already own.

How to style it yourself: TikTok is inspiring celebrity fashion trends from tie dye to straw hats

1. Tie-dye sweats

Tying your clothes up with rubber bands will help you achieve the perfect tie-dye look. (Photo: SPENCER MORECROFT)

Many are sporting this comfortable and colorful look, but these sweat sets can range from $50 to $250. The look is easy to replicate at home with a fabric dye kit ($15 to $30).

All you have to do is find some white cotton sweatshirts, sweatpants, zip-up jackets or shorts (pre-wash if they’re new). Rinse your garments, rubber band them, then tie dye away – with as many or few colors as you’d like. Once you’re done, place the wet clothes in a plastic bag (to prevent a mess) for 6 to 8 hours before washing.

So how many colors should you add? Alison Deyette, a style and beauty expert seen on the “Today” show and “Good Morning America,” suggests using four or more colors if you’re looking for a ’60s Grateful Dead vibe, but limiting yourself to one or two may help you achieve a more contemporary look.

2. Acid-washed clothing

If the tie-dye is too colorful for you, no worries! You can create a vintage splattered look on your dark-colored T-shirts with some bleach or even stencil your own design with a Chlorox bleach pen.

“Draw a design, let it sit for an hour, and when you come back, it might get a little dry,” Deyette says. “Just brush off that top layer of the crustiness, let it sit again, then wash the item and you now have your own white design.”

Kids Clothing 101: Fashion Trends in Kid Clothes

Posted on

The importance of kids clothing is on the rise. Now more than ever, a child’s creativity is showcased in his or her wardrobe, and whether your child makes all their own outfit decisions or you as a parents just want to see your son or daughter looking their best, this year there is plenty of inspiration to go around.

Designers are now apprehending the growing demand for kids clothing lines after a number of sons and daughters of celebrities were spotted in brand-name threads. The economy-minded styles of last year are being replaced by pricier takes on kids clothes. Copycats will look to luxury fabrics to imply the expensive label look.

The coming autumn chill will inevitably give rise to a myriad of winter wear, and this year we can look forward to clothes like velvet coats, suede boots, fur (or faux) lining, silk sweaters and kimonos, and knit dresses. Last year’s big trend in cutesy ‘kawaii’ Japanese-inspired clothing is giving way to a more historical inspiration: geisha robes and dolly shoes. If, like most parents, your budget doesn’t have much room to swath your child in lavish fabrics, there are a number of ways to stay on the cutting-edge of fashionable kids clothes without compromising your wallet.

Sticking to a more classic style of clothes for kids is a great way to stay out of the high-demand and high-price items while still looking great. With a growing child, frequent trips to the mall is not only costly, it can also be hard on the planet. Eco-friendly clothing for kids is on the rise; sustainable materials such as hemp, bamboo, and organic cotton fabrics satisfy the environmentally conscious parent.

Often these green fabrics specialize in tried-and-true kids clothing styles. Earthy looks such as utility jackets, dark denims, knits, and leggings for kids are always in for the smart and trendy shopper. Scandinavian knits and stripes continue to be a staple in winter kids clothes. Pattern mixing, the modern hallmark of a developing and experimental style, is one trend still going strong in kids clothing, and it’s also a cost-effective way to create new outfits. Striped tights, flowered dresses, and plaid shirts will be seen often, and often together! Sprinkle in a new burst of popularity in 80s accessories like sequins, bobbers, hair bands, and plastic bracelets–perfect for the tactile and trendy child, safe enough to satisfy mom–and you’ll have a child even chic grownups will be looking to for fashion inspiration.

Top Ten Fashion Trends From the 1940’s

Rationing:

World War II impacted virtually every aspect of American life and fashion was no exception. In 1942, the United States imposed a rationing system similar to the one Great Britain had implemented the previous year, limiting, among other things, the amount of fabric that could be used in a single garment. Materials including wool, silk, leather and a fledgling DuPont Corp. invention called nylon were diverted for use in uniforms, parachutes, shoelaces and even bomber noses.

Jackets could be no more than 25 inches in length, pants no more than 19 inches in circumference at the hem, belts no more than two inches wide and heels no more than an inch in height. Hemlines rose to the knee in an effort to conserve fabric. Buttons, cuffs, pockets and decorative details like ruffles and lace were used sparingly. Women wore shorter, boxy jackets for a V-shaped silhouette reminiscent of military uniforms. Even Hollywood traded elaborate costumes for simplified designs, a move many claimed lent movies a new air of realism.

Nylon:

As soon as it was introduced in 1938, women embraced synthetic nylon as a replacement for silk stockings. In the early 1940s, however, with silk already diverted to the war effort, the government recognized similar uses for nylon and commandeered it as well. Women responded by coating their legs in tan makeup and drawing lines up the backs of their calves to mimic seams. By the time the war ended and stockings returned to store shelves, nylon had become a generic term for hosiery.

Swing skirts.

The swing skirt had a round cut designed to look best in full jitterbug twirl. Swing skirts were a common sight on USO dance floors as young women danced with uniformed men to the jazzy horns that characterized the Big Band Era. Housewives were known to wear a more conservative version of the swing dress, sometimes in polka-dot or tiny floral prints.

Hats:

Hats became one of the few ways to express individual style with minimal resources. They were worn in a wide range of styles and personalized with scraps of foil, sequins, netting, paper and string.

Hair and makeup:

Hairstyles became more elaborate as women sought ways to contrast their dull wardrobes. Shoulder length or longer hair was rolled into complex shapes and secured with bobby pins. Screen sirens like Lauren Bacall, Veronica Lake and Rita Hayworth popularized side parts and finger waves. Makeup was dramatic, characterized by matte foundation, powder, heavy brows and bright scarlet lips.

Platform pumps:

The wartime shortage of leather and steel forced shoe designers to get more creative and, as a result, shoes were cobbled from materials ranging from crocodile hide to cork. Shoes were more utilitarian than stylish, with low heels and limited color choices. By the mid to late 1940s, platform pumps with high heels in T-straps, ankle straps or open toes had replaced the dowdy wedgie with its flat shape and thick cork soles.

Vintage Inspired Trends Would Have Never Gone Out of, Well, Style

1. Vintage furniture

Indeed! The joy of ageing is the moment in your life when you learn that the so called recent history for you may turn to be the ancient history for others.

Everything you get for your home – rugs, furniture, lighting, painting, artwork… can be affixed with labels like “antique” or “vintage”.

Basically, what is labeled vintage? What is the difference between vintage and antique furniture?

A piece of furniture that is aged between 30 to 100 years is vintage. A furniture that exceeds 100 years is classified as antique furniture.

2. Mid century Vintage furniture

The modern style mid century vintage furniture has been enjoying the moments since the 21st century. They would be correctly labelled by both vintage and retro. Perhaps, to earn the title vintage, the furniture should also be an example of what defined a style of that period.

Buying vintage furniture is a good strategy to get good quality furniture that adds originality and cool appeal to your house at an affordable price. Thus, it is currently on trends and has several reasons to become popular.

Hopefully, you can all make it out to shop!

3. Cool appealing vintage furniture

It gives a unique look to your house as times go by, this furniture becomes less common. As a result, they give your decor individuality and style. Since the vintage covers several decades, you can opt pieces all from one vintage era to re-create that particular style or you can carefully pick a collection of vintage pieces from different eras that combine to give a harmonious look.

4. Unique look vintage furniture

It is Budget-Friendly.

It is usually less expensive than buying new furniture of the same style and quality. If you are looking for fine quality furniture that fits your pocket, then buying vintage pieces of furniture gives you the ability to pamper your fondness for the better things in life.

It Is Environment-Friendly

Living with vintage furniture has a very positive effect on the environment. It not only treasures the past for our lifestyle today but also saves landfill space. It has many other positive “green” effects on our planet.

The new furniture consists of powerful synthetic glues that bind the sawdust to release formaldehyde and other chemical vapors into the air we breathe in our homes and offices for years. The vintage furniture is refinished using water based finishes. This is much better for the environment as they are free from the carcinogens, making life healthier and environment-friendly.

Vintage-inspired trends that are back for 2017. Hopefully, you can all make it out to shop!

2011 Fashion Trends For Children's Clothing

Posted on

2010 has been an interesting year for fashion. This is the year where the press criticized celebrity baby Suri Cruise for wearing expensive designer kid's clothing. This is the year where designer brands began to actively produce clothes for children-as there seems to be a market for expensive kid's clothing. This is the year where children and adults alike explored the potentials of fashion from another culture-with Japanese and Korean fashion being in the forefront of the kid's clothing and adult clothing fashion trends. And the year has not even ended!

So what can people expect for the year 2011? It's not too early to tell: after all, designers and clothing companies release their clothing lines early. The likes of Ducci and even lesser known brands such as Ouef Eco have already shown their 2011 designs, among many others. What prominent trends can be seen from these early kid's clothing releases?

Perhaps the most prominent trend to surge for the year 2011 is the theme of practical luxury or elegance for kid's clothing. Again, this is a trend that probably stemmed from the "Suri Cruise effect," wherein children want to wear designer clothes and parents want to dress their children in design brands. However, the clothing companies are gunning for something appropriate for kids despite its designer-luxury trappings. These designer kid's clothing items will be comfortable and will steer away from styles that are inappropriate for the toddler and pre-teen set.

Of course, don't expect these "practical luxuries" to be practically priced.

The eco-conscious theme will also become prominent in 2011, sipping its way from the adult runway to the kid's clothing industry. Expect kid's clothing pieces made from highly sustainable materials such as bamboo, organic cotton, and other similar fabrics. In short: frivolous is out, environmental trends are in.

Fashion pundits are already proclaiming the year 2011 as the year when the 80s rocker look returns. Expect this influence to become apparent in kid's clothing-or at least in teen and pre-teen clothing. Don't expect kid's clothing to incorporate the leather and the highly sexualized look of 80s rock, although many will see the disgruntled, mixed and matched styles that the 80s made popular.

Because of this, Japanese-inspired kid's clothing will become a bigger hit in 2011. This fashion aesthetic somewhat adheres to the concept of 80s fashion-clothes and accessories that shouldn't match but go well together anyway, the somewhat mature Victorian-inspired dresses , the exotic Lolita-styled dresses made innocent and child-like (and therefore safe yet cute).

For girl's fashion, expect dresses with flowing fabrics. This trend, which is more apparent in countries such as Australia and United Kingdom, is likely to be incorporated in kid's clothing-a far cry from the current trend of flesh showing for women's fashion. What not to expect in kid's clothing in 2011: velvet. Many fashion journalists are already seeing velvet as a major material in some of the biggest designs for next year-but it's unlikely that this material will enter the kid's clothing scene. …

Men’s Fashion Trends

Posted on

One of the great things about men’s fashion is that while trends come and go, such as the polyester suit of the 70s and the punk look of the 80s, it always seems to gravitate back towards a clean and masculine look. 2011 has definitely brought a major resurgence of this classic appearance. In both high fashion and catalog spreads, you’ll see men dressed in flattering styles and natural fabrics. The grunge look of the 90s is out, and the well-groomed clean cut appearance of an earlier era has made a comeback. Along these lines, here are 3 of my favorite trends in men’s fashion coming up for fall of 2011.

Colored denim- We have a tendency to always think of denim as meaning “blue jeans.” But colored denim is a great trend for fall, and a nice way to dress up your normal denim look. Now it’s accepted that you can wear white jeans, even after Labor Day. Just anchor them with darker pieces, such as gray or brown shoes and belt, and a navy sport jacket. Gray jeans are a terrific look for fall. You can pair them with other cool tones, such as a blue and white striped shirt, camel suede shoes, and a blue denim jacket for a nice, calming look. Or for something a little bolder, try yellow-gold denim pants. Just remember that this is a bright color, and the rest of your outfit should remain in neutral shades, such as tans or navy blues.

“Mad Men” inspired fashion- Since the television show “Mad Men” became raucously popular, several different clothing companies have introduced tailored and form-fitting lines inspired by the pre-hippie era of the early 1960s. I am personally looking forward to Banana Republic’s “Mad Men” inspired men’s line that will be introduced this fall. The reason this particular line works so well is that it offers a bit of an updated twist on classic, retro looks. This is the very key to looking appropriate, not like you are wearing a costume, when emulating vintage fashion. Key pieces to pulling off the “Mad Men” inspired look are slim cut suits, shawl-collared sweaters, slim cut pin stripe trousers, vests, and waist coats. If you are attending a formal event, a classic black silk bow tie is key, and for everyday wear, a nice silk tie with necktie accessoriesis appropriate.

Casual dressy looks- What do I mean by “causal dressy”? Well, it differs from what you think of as straight-up dressy. For a casual dressy look, start with a casual foundation. This could be a pair of relaxed fit chinos and a polo shirt or silk screened cotton tee shirt. Then, add an element that you would normally only think of as dressy, such as a well fitted sport jacket. For another casual dressy look, try a pair of dark wash jeans and a button down shirt with the vest from your three piece suit. Or, black denim pants with a plain white tee shirt and …
