Pregnant women are more likely to die from the coronavirus, though risk remains small

Pregnant women who catch the coronavirus are at greater risk of death and severe illness than women who are not pregnant, even as the risk overall remains small, according to federal statistics released Monday.

A CDC study finds that pregnant women are more likely to be admitted to an intensive care unit after being diagnosed with covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, than women who are not pregnant. (Charles Krupa/AP)

The data — the most comprehensive U.S. accounting to date of how the virus affects pregnant women — shows that pregnant women are almost three times more likely to be admitted to intensive care units, and more than three times more likely to be put on a ventilator. The findings echo previous studies linking pregnancy to increased risk for severe illness.

The overall risk to pregnant women remains small because they tend to be younger and healthy, according to the report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Out of 19,600 pregnant women studied, 33 died — a 0.2 percent death rate. For women who are not pregnant, the death rate was 0.1 percent, the report said.

The CDC study also reinforced findings about the disparate path of the pandemic in the United States, with Black, Hispanic and Asian women at greater peril from the virus.

The increased risk to pregnant women should serve as a warning to those who are expecting a baby to be especially vigilant against infection, experts said.

“Some people think that because if you’re young and healthy, you’ll be okay, and pandemic fatigue is setting in. But the fact is at my practice, we’ve seen women who are pregnant on ventilators. It affects the mother, the delivery and the baby,” said David Jaspan, chair of the obstetrics and gynecology department at the Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia, who was not involved in the study.

“We have no predictive ability how this will impact you, so the best advice we can offer is prevention,” Jaspan said. “Wear a mask. Social distance. Stay away from people who may be infected.”

Some pregnant women may not be getting diagnosed until later in their illness because the virus shares some common symptoms with pregnancy — fatigue, nausea and vomiting.

“We want patients to not make the assumption that what they’re feeling is just from pregnancy. Keep up your appointments,” Jaspan said. “Give us a chance to evaluate and ensure you’re okay.”

The report draws on data the CDC collected from hospitals throughout the country. It found that 1.1 percent of pregnant women were admitted to an ICU after being diagnosed with covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, compared with 0.4 percent of women who were not pregnant. The rate requiring ventilation was 0.3 percent for pregnant women and 0.1 percent for other women.

Researchers believe the increased risk may be attributable to physiological changes that occur with pregnancy, such as increased heart rate and oxygen consumption, decreased lung capacity and shifts in

Sky Top Lanes renovation brings health care, fitness and beauty to East Main Street

TORRINGTON — Anyone who’s lived in the city since the 1960s probably remembers Sky Top Bowling Lanes.

Today, after a $4.5 million renovation, the former bowling alley is home to Hartford Healthcare Urgent Care, Club 24 and Hair By Design, a day spa, done by PAC Group LLC. The Torrington-based development company owned by Paul Prenoveaux, its CEO and founder, bought the bowling alley in 2016 from the Dedomenicis family, who were ready to let the building go to a new owner.

“When we bought it, we had hopes to turn it into a wellness center for Charlotte Hungerford Hospital,” said PAC Group Vice President of Real Estate, Bill Zampaglione. “Not long after that, Charlotte Hungerford merged with Hartford HealthCare. That move put the plan off track — we couldn’t get a commitment. So we went in another direction, and thought we’d put in a restaurant.”

Using that restaurant idea as a basis for their design, PAC began its renovations, including adding an outdoor patio to the backside of the space overlooking East Main Street.

Then, PAC was approached by Hartford HealthCare for the urgent care facility.

“As we built, Hartford HealthCare decided to go with an urgent care center with primary care doctors, and a physical rehab,” Zampaglione said.

Club 24 came next, with a 17,000-square-foot gym, and Hair By Design moved into a 3,200-square-foot space between the two. “The building is now at 100 percent occupancy,” said PAC’s assistant project manager Chris Blake. “It’s a beautiful repurposing of the building.”

Keeping the Skytop name was important to Zampaglione.

“We got the Dedomenicis family’s blessing to do this, we were proud to have their help,” he said. “We gave them the opportunity to take any mementos and pieces of the building that they wanted, and they brought us photos, dating back 45 years, to share with us so we could appreciate the history. So the name, The Shops at Skytop, honors the family’s memory.”

The Dedomenicis family, he said, realized their business as a bowling alley had changed. “It wasn’t the same for them anymore,” he said. “They were wonderful to work with.”

While the renovation was underway, Zampaglione said he got “mixed reviews” from residents and outsiders. “People have said, why Torrington,” he said. “Why not build in

Behind the scenes at digital fashion shows

Excerpts from the interview:

What is the major difference in organising a digital fashion show to that of a real time physical show?

Chandok: We have made significant investments in two areas – one in the creation of digital architecture which will form the backbone of the platform, and the other in enhancing our content with various vantage points and CG environments.

The first part is an investment for the future as the platform and virtual showroom will become part of the core of the event going forward even when we return to a physical event. The second part showcases to the industry what technology can actually do. We have worked with the same team that we usually have for LFW and employed experts and agencies to build the architecture. The format has provided the team the opportunity to expand their skillsets.

While the whole interface will reside within a 3D environment, some key innovations are:

Consumers will have the opportunity to buy directly off the Runway as they view videos on the platform.

Viewers can choose different camera angles to view the show providing a more exclusive experience.

The Virtual Showroom will provide an end to end solution for buyers and designers to connect and aid B2B business.

What are the pros and cons of holding digital shows?

Chandok: With Lakme Fashion Week moving to a digital format, the biggest pro is that now everyone has an opportunity to see the reveal live as it happens, earlier it was only a few who had early access. The platform itself is now much more inclusive and social media distribution coupled with LFW being the first fashion week to ever stream on an OTT platform makes the content available to a much larger audience, not only in India but world over. There are shoppable shows, where viewers will be able to put designs directly from the virtual runway into an online shopping cart.

Additionally, there are many innovations that not only will help the audience be engaged but make designers/collections more accessible for them. We have ensured that the steps we have taken are in line with our goal of making fashion week future ready, our innovations will seamlessly integrate with the physical event when it returns. We have always seen Lakme Fashion Week as a phygital platform and hence have been better placed to navigate this journey than traditional fashion weeks globally.

Is this going to be the future?

Chandok: While only time will tell if this is going to be the future, we began our journey towards being a digital platform a few years ago, thus some of the actions were already in place when the pandemic hit. We were the first ever fashion week in the world to livestream on OTT networks and also pioneered innovations in social media actions and virtual reality. A key decision of investments this season were on actions that are less reactionary and more strategic.

Hence the creation of the Hub, Virtual Showroom,

Black-ish invites Danny Glover on as an unexpected guest at Pops and Ruby’s wedding

Richard Cartwright/ABC

The long-awaited Black-ish wedding between Pops and Ruby is getting an extra-special attendee.

Not only is the ABC sitcom bringing on veteran actor Danny Glover as a guest star in the upcoming episode “Our Wedding Dre,” it’s welcoming him into the family.

In a move that reunites him with his The Color Purple costar Laurence Fishburne, Glover will play Pops’ brother Uncle Norman, an unexpected guest who causes Dre’s intimate wedding plans to go awry.

Dre (Anthony Anderson) isn’t the only one having trouble, though. Elsewhere his mother, Ruby (Jenifer Lewis), refuses to let Bow (Tracee Ellis Ross) help her prepare for the wedding until an unanticipated situation provides an opening for her doctor daughter-in-law to remedy the issue.

Richard Cartwright/ABC

Black-ish showrunner Courtney Lilly previously teased the wedding episode, telling EW, “It will be a COVID wedding dealing with those kinds of realities.” He added that for whatever issues Pops and Ruby may have, another breakup will likely not be one of them. “I’m not interested in, for the sake of drama, going like, ‘They’re on the rocks.’ No, we’ve done it. They’ve reached the finish line. It’s a challenge on us as writers to make sure that we didn’t take out all the things that are interesting about their relationship.”

“Our Wedding Dre” will air Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. Check out two exclusive photos from the episode above.

Moment launches series of MagSafe mounting accessories for iPhone 12: Digital Photography Review

iPhone lens and accessory manufacturer Moment has launched a new collection of mounts that make use of the magnet embedded in the Apple iPhone 12 to attach to the phone. The mount include their own magnets to connect with those in the phone’s body, and different fixtures on the other side that allow users to mount to phone on a support or to mount accessories on the phone.

The accessories line up includes a mount for the air vent of a car, a tripod adapter, a cold shoe to fit accessories to the phone as well as a mount that allows you to attach your iPhone to the wall. Moment says it uses a ‘propreitary (M)Force magnet array’ that offers an extra powerful magnetic field to ensure accessories don’t fall off the phone and the phone doesn’t fall off your tripod.

The mounts can be used with or without an iPhone case, and feature a padded connection surface to avoid damage to the phone’s finish.
Prices for the series start at $19.99 for the wall mount, and go up to $49.99 for the Pro Tripod Mount that also includes a cold shoe for microphones or video lights. These mounts are due to ship in March 2021.

The company also has a new series of cases that include MagSafe. These cost $49.99 each. For more information see the Moment website.

Press release:

Reintroducing Moment for iPhone 12.

Apple introduced MagSafe. We’re introducing everything else. New Cases. Tripod Mounts. Cold Shoe Mounts. Stick To Anything Mounts. All compatible with MagSafe.

Starting at $19.99. Only at Moment.

Why MagSafe?

We believe it’s the future for how you quickly attach your favorite gear to your phone, and your phone to your favorite gear. Whether you are new to mobile photography or a pro filmmaker, we believe MagSafe will be more accessible than any of the current phone clamp solutions.

Why Moment for MagSafe?

We have engineered a unique magnet array that gives our accessories that extra connective strength. We are calling it (M)Force and it’s in all of our accessory mounts. Patent Pending, each of our mount has a unique use of magnets and mechanical features that make them easier (and stronger) to use. Usable with or without a case, today is just the beginning for what we plan to release.

We are excited for the future of mobile photography and filmmaking with MagSafe. We hope you join us!

Sacha Baron Cohen Delivers Borat’s ‘Emergency Voting Informations for Women of US&A’

Click here to read the full article.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat character is making a satirical pre-election pitch to female voters, asking them not to vote in the presidential election.

In a video posted Monday to Borat’s Twitter account, he said, “This is important message. Women — do not vote tomorrow. We hear if you do then glorious Premier Trump will lose. This is because like moths into a fire, you ladies are attracted by dangerous ideas like honesty, fairness and consent.”

“Do not believe the Democrat lies that Premier Trump do not like women. He really like them. 26 accusers cannot all be lying. He value ladies very much — up to $180,000 if they really pretty,” Borat continues. “If he stay in power and out of jail, similar monies could be going to you. This called Trump’s trickle down economy. Premier Trump very pro-women as he has made clear — your body, his choice. Women of US and A. This is the most important election of our lifetime. So leave it to the men.”

Last month, Trump was accused of another 26 incidents of “unwanted sexual contact” in the book “All the President’s Women: Donald Trump and the Making of a Predator” by Barry Levine and Monique El-Faizy.

Amazon Prime Video released the “Borat” sequel, titled “Borat Subsequent Movie Film,” on Oct. 23. In one of the film’s memorable scenes, Rudy Giuliani, former New York City mayor and current attorney to Trump  is tricked into entering the bedroom of a hotel suite by Maria Bakalova, portraying Borat’s daughter.

Posing as a TV journalist, the 24-year-old actor invites Giuliani for a fawning interview for a made-up conservative news program. During their encounter, the attorney drinks Scotch and ignores social distancing measures. At one point, he even tells Bakalova that the president’s speedy responses in the spring saved American lives from coronavirus outbreaks. “I’d say he saved a million lives,” Giuliani says before coughing.

Target

For that person in your life who loves a blowout but hates the hassle of doing one at home, this Revlon brush is a serious game-changer for your hair. It’s a hair dryer and styling brush combo that takes away the hassle of having to hold two different styling tools at once.

I can personally attest to how brilliant this brush is, and almost everyone I know who’s tried it feels the same way. With naturally curly hair, I used to have to spend 20 minutes trying to blow out my hair. But now, I let it air dry slightly and all I have to do is spend about 5 to 10 minutes with this brush and my hair looks sleek and has that bouncy “I just came from the salon” look.

Lots of us were used to regular manicures prepandemic, but now you may either totally opt out of salon visits or your manicures are way less frequent. For someone who loves having their nails done all the time, they will love this manicure set that makes doing your own nails easier.

Olive and June developed a nail polish bottle handle specifically for someone who is painting their own nails. The flat, wide handle gives you better control as you paint your nails, and it’s more comfortable to hold than a typical polish bottle handle. The kit also includes a nail polish remover pot, nail clipper, file, buffer cube, top coat, nail polish and a cuticle serum.

Amazon/Dyson

The Dyson air wrap is as much a conversation starter as a hair-styling tool. Gift this to a friend or family member and people will constantly ask them about it (and likely want to try it). The air wrap tool automatically wraps your hair around the barrel, drying and styling it all at once. The Dyson technology allows your hair to dry and style with hot air instead of heating the barrel itself, which is supposed to create less hair damage than a curling iron.
