Oregon Ducks women’s basketball at Portland Pilots: Live updates

The 10th-ranked Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team visits the Portland Pilots on Monday night. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at the Chiles Center.

It’s a matchup that might have happened during the 2019-20 postseason, if not for the NCAA Tournament being canceled amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Pilots had earned an NCAA Tournament berth by winning the West Coast Conference tournament, and the Ducks were expected to be a top seed and host first- and second-round games in Eugene. It’s certainly possible that Portland would have been placed in the Ducks’ four-team pod in Eugene.

Instead, the teams are set to meet eight months later in a nonconference matchup early in the 2020-21 season.

HALFTIME: Oregon 34, Portland 22

The Ducks go up 20-9 early in the second quarter on Nyara Sabally’s layup. With 7:59 left in the first half, there’s a timeout on the floor. Oregon leads it 20-10. A few minutes later, Te-Hina Paopao hits a three, and the Ducks extend their lead to 30-17 with about 3 minutes to play in the first half. Then a Taylor Chavez jumper and an Erin Boley layup make it 34-17. Then the Pilots’ Keeley Frawley hits a three to make it 34-20. Portland closes the half on a 5-0 run, and the Pilots trail 34-22 at the half. Erin Boley leads the Ducks with nine points, while Sedona Prince has eight and Taylor Chavez has seven. For the Pilots, Alex Fowler leads the way with six points and three rebounds.

END 1ST QUARTER: Oregon 18, Portland 9

Erin Boley scores the first seven points for the Ducks, first on a short jumper and then on a three-pointer and then on a layup. Oregon leads it 9-4 with 6:40 to play in the first quarter. Maddie Muhlheim drives and scores the layup for the Pilots to cut the Ducks’ lead to 9-7. A short time later, Alex Fowler scores on a fast-break layup, and the Pilots trail 11-9. And that’s the margin at the first quarter media timeout, with 4:19 to go in the quarter. The Ducks lead it 13-9 now, but they’re missing a lot of close-range shots. Oregon closes the first quarter on a 7-0 run, and the Ducks lead it 18-9 heading to the second quarter.
