Anyone can begin making model rockets at a basic level and work their way up to the more difficult levels.

The basic parts of a model rocket kit are a cardboard body, fins made out of balsa and plastic, a plastic nose cone and a recovery parachute or streamers. To that kit you will need to add a rocket motor, which is usually sold separately. You will also need a launch controller and launch pad, which are also sold separately.

Even though that might appear to be a great number of different bits and pieces that you need to purchase, constructing and launching rockets is a surprisingly cheap pastime to have fun with.

You can begin flying rockets with ready to fly kits that need little assembly skills and that will only take minutes to assemble. Very quickly you may well be watching the launch of your first ever model. Starting off with the easiest to construct kits is a good way to learn the fundamentals of how the things are put together and how they work. Some of the more advanced kits really do require time and effort to put together, but the end result is amazing.

In summary constructing and launching rockets is super fun, it's inexpensive, and it's an educational hobby that the whole family can enjoy.
