Alabama postal worker surprises birthday boy with gift

OPELIKA, Ala. — When Chip Matthews heard the mail truck arriving on his sixth birthday, he rushed out – not knowing that he’d come back with a treasure.

Outside the house, which was decorated with birthday balloons, mail carrier Tawanna Purter held a pile of boxes. One of them was marked with Chip’s name and a greeting for his special day, Nov. 5.

“So, when he came running out the door, I said: ‘You must be Chip!’ And he was like, yes. I said, ‘Today’s your birthday?’ And he started smiling,” Purter said.

“So, I said, ‘Let me see if I can find you something for your birthday.'” She checked her pocket and surprised him with a gift: a dollar bill and four quarters.

This is the kind of thing Purter does – “I help out anybody, I don’t care,” she said – surprising people with gas or grocery money when they need it, paying forward the kindnesses of others who helped her out when she struggled to keep a job.

On this day, the 42-year-old letter carrier made one little boy very happy.

“He was ecstatic,” said his mom, Bonnie Matthews. “He came running back in the house just waving his money, so excited that he got some birthday money from somewhere extra special and unexpected.”

Chip is saving up to buy a Spider-Man action figure. His mom said the kind gesture gave the Opelika, Alabama, family hope after the long months of pandemic isolation, during which she lost her job as a school counselor.

“Our family, like many families, has endured a lot … has had some pretty significant challenges. And so, gestures like that, I think those are the things, those are the memories that we’re hoping to take away from these nine months,” Bonnie Matthews said.

Her hope is that Chip and his 8-year-old sister, Bennett, will remember this when they grow up. “Not the ugly that was out there right now, but the good and the kind and the giving.”

A photo of a smiling Chip and Purter next to the mail truck has been shared widely on social media. Purter said she was just trying to give back, because people are often nice to her 8-year-old son, Joshua, and sometimes give him a buck or two to brighten his day.

On a recent day, Chip heard the mail truck and rushed out again, this time to deliver an envelope with a thank-you card for his favorite mail carrier. They smiled again and posed for another photo.

“Even though … no one knows how they’re going to make it from here to the next day,” Purter said, “there are still people that … take their time and still want to show kindness.”

Since that day, the families have kept in contact. Purter has struggled to find someone who can take care of her son, and Matthews agreed to watch him at her home so he can attend virtual classes while his mom is on her

Biden’s Foolish Immigration Priorities

Joe Biden shouldn’t want to begin his administration with a renewed migrant crisis at the border, but that’s what his priorities risk creating. After many false starts — including the zero-tolerance policy that drove family separations — the Trump administration got a handle on the border thanks to its “remain in Mexico” policy and “safe third country” agreements with Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. These initiatives closed an enormous loophole in the U.S. asylum system — undeserving asylum-seekers were able to gain access to our country, stay here for years while their claims worked their way through overwhelmed immigration courts, and remain even after their claims were denied because we lack the capacity (or will) to track and deport them. This running, de facto amnesty served as a powerful magnet for migrants from Central America. But the Trump administration managed to get Mexico to agree to the so-called Migration Protection Protocols. This meant that asylum-seekers from countries other than Mexico could be made to remain in Mexico while their claims were adjudicated in the U.S. Also, under the safe-third-country agreements, asylum-seekers could be sent to Guatemala, El Salvador, or Honduras (whichever wasn’t their home country) to apply for asylum there. The theory was that if they were genuinely persecuted in their own country rather than simply seeking to come to the United States, they’d be satisfied to apply for asylum in some other nearby country; as it turned out, not surprisingly, most simply chose to go home when they realized an asylum claim wasn’t a ticket into the United States. On top of all of this, the Trump administration began to tighten up on the lax way that asylum rules have been interpreted. Under the law, someone is supposed to be eligible for asylum only if he is targeted for persecution because of his race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion — a definition that shouldn’t apply to economic migrants or people who fear domestic or gang violence.Biden is pledging to destroy this entire architecture, and his aides have been telling reporters that this is exactly what he will do. The rollback will court another border crisis that even the most migrant-friendly administration will be hard-pressed to manage (many of the photographs of cages at the border that spread on social media to condemn Trump’s policies actually dated from the Obama years). Biden also may bring into the U.S. the tens of thousands of asylum-seekers currently waiting in Mexico, which, barring stringent controls, would likely lead to them staying here forever. The first question confronting Biden will be whether to overturn the so-called Title 42 processing that the Trump administration has been using, citing public-health grounds to quickly return migrants coming over the border from Mexico. With the agreements with Mexico and Central American in suspended animation during the pandemic, Title 42 is necessary stopgap that Biden will come under intense pressure from pro-immigration groups to reverse.Biden’s immigration agenda isn’t, of course, limited to

Fashion photography’s reluctant poster boy

Although his early work was often indistinguishable from other photographers at Vogue, he was already experimenting with enlarging his portraits. “This enlargement creates blurring effects and allows the grain of the photomechanical grid to appear clearly visible, which is typical of Man Ray’s photographs,” says co-curator Maud Marron-Wojewodzki. His desire for experimentation also led him to produce images such as Noire et Blanche (Black and White), which first appeared in a May 1926 edition of Vogue. The pale, elongated face of his then lover, Kiki de Montparnasse, is juxtaposed with an African ceremonial mask in an image that references Surrealist ideas of the unconscious and the photographic process itself.

Stranger things

As Ray honed his craft throughout the decade, the circles he moved in had an increasing stylistic impact on his work. Dada and Surrealism gave him the freedom “to invent a form of expression all his own which consisted mainly of distancing himself from the reality of the model he had to photograph,” says Örmen. “He cultivates a taste for fetishism in his images – photographs of feet are numerous, and accessories play a leading role,” adds Marron-Wojewodzki, who also notes his fascination with wax mannequins and an element of “disturbing Freudian strangeness” throughout his fashion photography.

Black Pre-Teen Candian Boy Launches Clothing Line with Cool Trending Stuff For Boys – Press Release

Black Pre-Teen Candian Boy Launches Clothing Line with Cool Trending Stuff For Boys

October 26, 2020 – Thanks to young fashion-loving Black Pre-teen entrepreneur, Caleb, boys of all ages can now purchase trendy and fashionable clothes from All Drip. Despite only being 11, Caleb has taken a liking to fashion and style and will not settle for wacky children’s clothes. With this drive, he pleaded nicely with his mother to let him start All Drip, a brand dedicated to bringing fashionable clothing to boys his age.

No one thought of this before, but All Dripp has made a magnificent start just when the shopping season is around the corner. For those who find shopping for boys’ clothing a nightmare, All Dripp brings new trends, fashionable goodies, and accessories right to your fingertips.

Everyone knows that when it comes to fashionable options for boys’ clothing, options are not great and limited. All Dripp was conceived after one such trip with the founder’s 11-year-old son. The selection lay in a small corner! The Covid situation added to the hassles. Well, the son had a brilliant response – he wanted a website where he could sell trendy clothes only for boys, and select all the other good stuff his friends would love.

Here buyers would find some cool stuff chosen by a youngster who shares the same tastes and preferences. All Drip’s inventory contains gamer gear too. These include T-shirts, sweaters & hoodies, jeans, hats & accessories, and more. For instance, check out the Boy’s Luminous Cotton T-Shirt, or the Starry Night Sky LED Night Light Projector. There is more cool stuff, like the Hedgehog T-Shirt for kids, or Boys Stainless Steel Fashion Quartz Watch, and a Stainless Super Hero Ring.

My mom says that ‘we have to be the change that you want to see’. So I hope to give boys more stylish clothes that they like. And let boys that look like me know that they can do anything,” says the young founder and budding entrepreneur of All Dripp.

All Dripp is just the beginning for the young Canadian founder, who is a Black, pre-teen entrepreneur and rising star, and is undergoing a homeschooling curriculum due to the dreary COVID-19. He will be a kid to watch in 2021. The website would appeal to moms and boys (between 2-16 years), young women, and all other entrepreneurs for inspiration.

All Dripp has had over 2,000 successful deliveries with a buyer protection scheme. These high-quality products are shipped to over 185 countries, with safe and multiple payment modes.

Apart from his mum, Caleb certainly has many people rooting for him. Not only do other kids love his clothing line, but their parents also. Canadian brands, Bossdiva.ca and Kuture.ca have earned praise from Caleb’s team for respectively styling and providing a haircut for the youngster.

Sunnyvale police have put out an all-points bulletin for a birthday boy whose “Nonney and Pa” sent him a gift in the mail.

Sunnyvale’s Department of Public Safety has the birthday card with a brand new $20 bill inside along with a bunch of other mail recently recovered from mail thieves, the department posted Wednesday on its Facebook page.

“Did your kid recently have a birthday and does your kid call their grandparents ‘Nonney and Pa?’” the Facebook post read.

With no envelope and no address, it’s a mystery for now.

San Francisco television station KPIX picked up the story, but the hunt continues.

Sunnyvale cops wouldn’t have the haul at all, they said, if it weren’t for a sharp-eyed resident who called in a report of a suspicious vehicle. Police soon were on the scene, the post read, and officers made two arrests.

One of the suspected thieves had an outstanding felony warrant; both were on probation.

But there’s still the matter of the card.

“We can’t wait to reunite this $20 with its rightful owner. If this sounds like your kid please inbox us,” the Sunnyvale police post continues. “Unfortunately there was no envelope, that’s why we have no address. We do know the name of the rightful owner, though, you’ll just need to confirm it for us and maybe we can even have Nonney and Pa on the phone for the reunion,” police said.

Sunnyvale police made one last appeal Wednesday: “Work your magic social media!”

Brother’s gift of bone marrow helps Durham boy get back on his feet

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) — A Durham 7-year-old is on the road to becoming free of his sickle cell disease and getting back on the tennis courts all thanks to a bone-marrow transplant from his older brother.

After 44 days, Noah Royster is walking out of the hospital ready to get back to being a kid.

“I wanted Noah to be cured of his sickle cell,” said his older brother, Blake.

Blake, 10, and Noah are best friends, but because of Noah’s sickle cell disease, there were a lot of things he couldn’t do.

“Blake likes to ski and when we’ve gone on ski trips before, we had to leave Noah at home,” said Noah’s mother, Anitra Royster. “One of the things about sickle cell disease is that altitude and very cold weather can trigger pain crisis and other illnesses within his body, and so we would go solo. When asked once by doctors why (Blake) felt he wanted to do this, he said, ‘so Noah can go skiing with us.'”

While Noah had to stay home during the ski trips, he did find some therapy through tennis. It started with a camp in 2018.

“Sickle cell disease actually relates to red blood cells and taking oxygen to part of the body,” Anitra Royster said. “As an athlete playing any sport, a lot of oxygen is needed to various parts of the body, so he hasn’t been able to play sports in a way that maybe a typical 7-year-old would be able to play.”

And when it comes to playing sports, Noah has what’s sometimes described as a high motor.

“Noah is the type of kid who never saves anything for the run home,” said his father, Dorell Royster. “With sickle cell disease, that’s always been hard because he would give out of energy and he wouldn’t.”

Ultimately, a bone-marrow transplant is the only cure for young children. That’s where big brother Blake came in — there was a 1-in-4 chance he would be a match – and he was.

“It’s absolutely amazing,” Anitra Royster said. “We refer to Blake as a superhero and definitely in his little brother’s eyes, he is. It was a really touching thing that Blake would agree to serve as a donor.”

The sibling love pulled at their father’s heartstrings.

“It brings a tear to my eye,” Dorell Royster said. “It’s a beautiful thing to see. They are each other’s best friends, and they really, the past month and a half has been really hard on them just from the perspective of being apart.”

For Blake, donating bone marrow involved outpatient surgery. Noah’s process was a bit more extensive – including three different chemos, platelets and blood transfusions, but it was tennis that got him back on his feet.

“it’s important that he get up and move around for his lungs and other parts of his body to recover and for him to be mobile,” Anitra Royster said. “He was hitting balls off the walls and
