Facebook-owned WhatsApp in its effort to make the shopping experience better during this year’s festive shopping season has introduced a shopping button on the platform to make it easier for people to discover a business’ catalog so they know what goods or services it offers. This will make it easier for businesses to have their products discovered which can help increase sales.

The ongoing spread of COVID-19 has become one of the biggest threats to the global economy and financial markets. To contain the impact of the coronavirus outbreak, India, like many countries across the globe, is taking several measures, including a nationwide lockdown; limiting movement of the entire population; shutting down public places and transport, and urging the public to stay indoors, maintain social distance, and work from home. The resulting economic disruption is a huge and short-term decline in activity for businesses, both large and small.

With economic growth expected to be severely hit, the financial outlook of the digital payments sector is no different and will follow a similar trajectory, at least in the short term. But the industry’s stability and potential for innovation will play an invaluable role in rebooting the economy in the new normal.

Payment systems have demonstrated that they are dependable and durable, and continue to command a high level of confidence from the general population. However, the closure of businesses and the lockdown have resulted in lower transaction volumes overall.

According to a recent survey by The Harris Poll, 76 per cent of adults in India said, “I am more likely to do business with/purchase from a company that I can contact via messaging than one that I cannot.”

According to a November 5 statement released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the authority has given approval for WhatsApp to ‘Go Live’ on UPI (Unified Payments Interface) in the multi-bank model. The app can expand its UPI user base in a graded manner starting with a maximum registered user base of 20 million in UPI.

In addition, the NPCI has said that a third-party app can process only up to 30 per cent of the total volume of UPI transactions (calculated basis the total volume of transactions processed in UPI during the preceding three months on a rolling basis). The new entrant, WhatsApp needs to comply with the regulation by January 1, 2021, while incumbents have been given two years to meet the guideline.

Earlier, the platform had been working to secure all required regulatory approvals in India for its payments service. The Competition Commission of India in August dismissed a complaint alleging that WhatsApp used anti-competitive practices in the country’s payment applications market, according to a report by S&P Global.

WhatsApp’s massive user base would have been its biggest edge over rivals. Even though NCPI’s restrictions have put that vision run on hold for now,

WhatsApp gets a new shopping button: How it works

With an eye to increase its e-commerce presence, WhatsApp has now introduced a new shopping button on the Business version of the app, that will allow users to browse through a business’ catalogue, message businesses directly.

The option is available on both Android and iOS smartphones. The shopping button gives users direct access to the catalog on the WhatsApp Business app. Users can access the button directly from their chat, making it easier for them to explore your products and services while chatting.

How WhatsApp’s new shopping button works:

The shopping button does not bring in any new functionality to the table but it simply makes the process of discovering product catalogues easier. The button, which looks like a storefront icon, will replace the call button within conversations.

However, the users will still be able to place voice or video calls in the application.

When interacting with a WhatsApp Business account, users will be able to see the shopping button on the chat screens of particular Business account on the app.

Once tapped, the shopping button will take you to the business’ catalogue through which you can see what goods and services you can purchase from that business. This will essentially help businesses on WhatsApp enhance discovery of their products and boost their sales.

According to WhatsApp, more than 175 million people message a WhatsApp Business account every day, and more than 40 million people view a business’ catalogue each month – including more than 3 million in India.

Although, it is not clear as to when this will happen, teasers shared by WhatsApp indicate that users might not have to wait too long for the upcoming feature.

With this addition, Facebook is aggressively boosting its e-commerce presence across the world. In recent times, WhatsApp introduced new features that allow WhatsApp Business users to sell products directly from the platform. The feature will allow purchases to be made directly from a WhatsApp chat with a business. The company will also provide hosting services to small businesses through Facebook’s partners in the country.

WhatsApp Business gets a new shopping button, check how the feature works

A new WhatsApp feature is being rolled out to users in India that will make it easier for people to discover a business’ catalog so they know what goods or services it offers. The Facebook-owned instant messaging app has been working on a Shopping button for quite some time and has announced that the feature will be made available from today.

WhatsApp states that over 175 million users message a WhatsApp Business account every day. Out of these, more than 40 million people view a business’ catalog each month – including more than 3M in India. The company cited a survey in which 76 percent of adults in India said “I am more likely to do business with/purchase from a company that I can contact via messaging than one that I cannot.”

To make it easier for such users, WhatsApp is rolling out a new shopping button. The feature is an upgrade over the existing WhatsApp business account feature wherein people had to click into the business’ profile to see if it had a catalog. Now, when a person sees the shopping button, which looks like a storefront icon, they will immediately know the business has a catalog so they can browse products and start a conversation about an item they see with just one tap. This will make it easier for businesses to have their products discovered which can help increase sales.

The new shopping button will replace the voice call button. To find the voice call button, simply tap on the call button to select either a voice or video call.

WhatsApp shopping button is being launched days after the launch of WhatsApp Pay in India. The new WhatsApp shopping button is available now across the world.
