Marks & Spencer has cancelled its Christmas clothing adverts and turned to online influencers to promote its range instead. 

Traditional TV ads will concentrate solely on food this year instead, with the first to appear in the coming weeks. 

The retailer is still planning to use influencers on social media to market clothing and homeware in the hope customers will shop online in the event of a lockdown over Christmas, according to Campaign.

Last year the company’s Christmas ad for clothing featured hip hop dancers in the store’s jumpers and pyjamas.

Sales for jumpers and pyjamas rose as a result but figures later showed that, overall, sales of clothing and homeware in the last three months of 2019 fell by 1.7 per cent.

It follows the onset of the Covid crisis, with more customers working from home, meaning demand for work-related wear has fallen since.

M&S announced in August that it is axing 7,000 jobs, with the bulk of cuts being made across its stores, hitting around 12 per cent of its 60,000 shop-based staff.

Regarding its last set of financial figures, retail analyst Natalie Berg, of NBK Retail, said of M&S clothing: ‘In trying to be everything to everyone they’ve ended up being nothing to no one.’

And fellow analyst, Kate Hardcastle, added: ‘Generally they have got a 25-year-old model wearing garments targeted at a 65-year-old who doesn’t feel included.

An M&S spokesperson said: ‘Despite all the uncertainty, we know our customers want to make Christmas special for the ones they love – however they’re celebrating. 

‘Whilst we aren’t sharing any details of our campaign yet, we’ll be marketing our clothing & home products with the magic & sparkle our customers expect of M&S. 

‘Alongside this we’ve made it our mission to help customers shop with confidence so we’ll continue to communicate all the robust measures we have in place – from contact free delivery to hosts on the door of every M&S store.’

AFI Conservatory Cancels Directing Workshop For Women Class Of 2022 Due To COVID-19 Pandemic

The AFI Conservatory has canceled the 2022 class of its Directing Workshop for Women due to the coronavirus pandemic. The program, which has trained more than 350 female filmmakers since 1974, will continue teaching its current class, though much of their training has been pushed back until next year.

“What’s infuriating to applicants like me is that they cancelled the program weeks after the application process closed, after hundreds of applicants like me spent months meeting their long list of requirements,” an applicant told Deadline. “This was the week they were supposed to notify whoever made it to the first round, but instead they sent out an email, which was crushing, to say the least.”

In an email to 2022 applicants, Susan Ruskin, dean of the AFI Conservatory and EVP of the American Film Institute, wrote: “As an industry, film and television production has suffered unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While we are making strides toward a safe return to work, the path forward is anything but certain. After careful deliberation, it is with heartfelt disappointment we are writing to inform you that we have made the difficult decision not to enroll a DWW class for 2022. We plan to use this time to focus on fulfilling our promise to the current class, who have been forced to adapt as production timelines continue to be pushed into 2021, as well as to carefully consider the future of the DWW program, including a possible expansion of its mandate to help bring untold and under-told stories to the screen.

“Thank you for your understanding, and for believing in the value of the program as we do. You will receive a full refund for the fees associated with your application. We also want to acknowledge that you have spent time and energy writing scripts, creating look books, writing essays, and creating application videos. In recognition of the effort you have made, if you apply to an AFI program in the future, you will not be charged an admissions fee for your next application. We will be in communication with you in the near future and will update you as we carefully consider what the DWW program will look like moving forward. We will also be hosting a series of DWW Alumnae Q&As over the next year, and you will be invited to these events. Until then, we look forward to a time when we will be able to accept a new class of exciting filmmakers like you.”

Bachelor’s Caila Quinn Cancels Wedding to Nick Burrello Amid COVID-19

Waiting for the right time. Caila Quinn and her fiancé, Nick Burrello, decided to officially cancel their wedding during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Bachelor alum, 29, penned a thoughtful blog post on Monday, October 19, detailing her “mixed emotions” as she and the businessman, 27, carefully weighed all of their options. The pair, who went public with their relationship in October 2017, originally hoped to tie the knot in Italy in May 2021. They also planned a second celebration to “accommodate” their family members who weren’t able to travel.

“After we were happy with our decision to have two ceremonies and tried to make our international dreams come true, on March 11th, 2020 COVID hit and had other plans,” Quinn wrote. “We held onto hope as long as we could, but with travel to Europe still prohibited 6 months out – we had to make the tough decision to cancel. After weeks of sleepless nights and going back & forth we finally know this is the right thing to do. And we need to do the right thing.”

The engaged couple wanted to be “optimistic people” when the pandemic set in, giving themselves a “deadline of January 2021” to figure out whether they would take their Italy wedding day off their calendar. Though they hoped that circumstances would be different then, Quinn’s mind began to change when a friend told her, “The world in January will look the same as it does today.”

As she continued to consider which path to follow, the Ohio native and her fiancé “grew stronger together” and stayed “united as a team.” The pair had “invested thousands of dollars” into their two ceremonies, but weren’t sure if it was worth the risk “if international travel to Europe is still banned” next spring. Ultimately, Quinn’s parents helped her make the impossible choice.

“I asked my father, ‘Dad – I need to know what is the right thing to do?’” the former reality star wrote. “He is always definitive which I appreciate. ‘Caila, the right thing to do is to cancel,’ said my dad. … And just like that, I felt like I could breathe again. I wanted to do the ‘right thing’ and for the longest time couldn’t see between the clouds what that was.”

Finally, Quinn and Burrello “came to the same conclusion,” and despite feeling like they were “completely torn in two,” agreed canceling was the safest option. “We took the time we needed to process the big change privately,” she concluded. “Appreciate you being kind and sensitive to our feelings as we close this door before opening the next one and starting to plan all over again.”

Zurich Opera House Cancels Performances of SLEEPING BEAUTY After Ballet Company Member Tests Positive For COVID-19

All dancers are to quarantine for 10 days, and hope to return to performances on Tuesday, October 27.

Zurich Opera House recently announced the cancellation of performances of Sleeping Beauty on October 17 and 18 after a member of the ballet company tested positive for COVID-19.

According to a statement on the Opera House’s website, all dancers will go into quarantine for 10 days. All participants were aware that a positive test result of one member of the ensemble would mean quarantine for the whole group.

“We hope that the Zurich Ballet will soon be able to return to the stage and that further performances can take place as planned from Tuesday, October 27,” the statement reads.

If you have booked, reserved or subscribed for the performance on Saturday, 17 Octobre 2020, your seats will be automatically rebooked for the performance on Saturday, 13 March 2021 at 7 pm.

NY’s Cuomo opens movie theaters as coronavirus hot spots cool off but cancels a Brooklyn wedding with 10,000 guests

NEW YORK — Gov. Andrew Cuomo gave the green light for movie theaters to open outside of New York City on Saturday as he all but declared victory over the coronavirus hot spots that had threatened to spread into a wider flare up.

Cinemas will be permitted to open on Oct. 23 in counties outside the five boroughs that have an overall COVID-19 positivity rate of less than 2% and that have no significant hot spots, Cuomo said at a midtown press conference.

The movie theaters will be limited to 25% capacity or a maximum of 50 viewers per screen.

Cuomo also said the state had served a health order on an Orthodox Jewish synagogue in Williamsburg that was planning a wedding that was expected to draw a crowd of some 10,000 revelers.

“You can get married, you just can’t have (10,000) people at your wedding,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo claimed the state has succeeded in cooling off the hot spots in neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Queens and upstate that had threatened to spread into wider outbreak.

“Literally we are going block by block and now we have the sophistication to do that,” Cuomo said. “It’s much smarter it’s more effective and it’s less disruptive.”

Cuomo announced that a record 160,000 tests were conducted Friday and the state’s overall positive test rate stands at 1.1%. Nine New Yorkers died of coronavirus.

The positivity rates in Brooklyn’s hot spots has dipped to below 5%, or about 30% down from where it was at the peak of the outbreak two or three weeks ago.

Many of the hot spots overlap with predominantly Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods in the city and upstate Orange and Rockland counties. The numbers spiked over the Jewish High Holidays, which include gatherings of synagogue congregations and families.

In several predominantly Hasidic areas upstate, the dip has been even more dramatic. In one zip code that includes the Hasidic enclave of Kiryas Joel, the positivity rate dropped by 75% from nearly 25% to a still-dangerous 6%.

Cuomo said the state and city appear to have been successful at preventing the virus from spreading beyond the neighborhoods that have been identified as red zones, where schools and businesses were ordered shut.

He said enforcing rules barring gatherings and ordering mask wearing have proven effective.

“If (people) are following the rules, the virus won’t spread,” Cuomo said. “It’s always a lack of compliance.”
