Ferian Is The Sustainable Jewellery And Handbag Brand Putting Thought And Care Into Accessories

Leonie Branston was decades into a successful career in fashion – spanning early Alexander McQueen (she worked on the renowned AW95 ‘Highland Rape’ show) and J.Crew under Jenna Lyons – when she decided to start her own label.

Each month ELLE UK is putting a spotlight on small fashion brands. This month we spoke to Leonie Branston, who created her own sustainable accessories brand after working at Alexander McQueen and J.Crew.

The designer, based in north London, had something quieter in mind: understated style with wearability at its heart. ‘It was time to test my own vision,’ she says from the home she also works from.

Since that moment in 2017, her test has paid off. Ferian (which takes its name from the Old English for ‘to carry’) creates bags and jewellery that are ‘modern and timeless’.

She left a full-time role as design director of womenswear at Margaret Howell to start her company, but she still consults for the British stalwart – and you can see what they have in common, with Branston’s emphasis on quality and craft.

With Ferian, there’s a chic sensibility, with flashes of rich colour in Wedgwood cameo signet rings, and classic box bags.

Sustainability and ethical production are of paramount importance. Pieces are made using vegetable-tanned leather and recycled gold in the West Midlands, using handworked saddlery methods. ‘I personally know everyone who makes everything,’ she says. ‘It’s key to feel proud of what you make.’

Proud she is. Always wearing her own work, Branston’s designs are testament to how easily they slot into everyday life: bags open easily with one hand (‘You might be holding on to your child’), and jewellery that survives ‘real’ life. Styles go with any outfit, too, with a hint of luxury in the leather finish and elegant gold clasp, and a restrained palette with flashes of ochre, cobalt or lime.

‘Leonie does modern minimalism beautifully,’ says Cassie Smart, head of womenswear buying at, where Ferian is stocked, along with and Liberty London. ‘Pieces feel like heirlooms that you can cherish.’

Timelessness was always the goal, Branston says. And, so far, it seems like she’s succeeded.

Undocumented and Pregnant: Why Women Are Afraid to Get Prenatal Care

EDINBURG, Texas — Britani first learned there was something wrong with her pregnancy late one night in July 2019 when she started bleeding and rushed to an emergency room.

The doctor on duty said she had an infection that could cause her to miscarry. Britani agreed to find an obstetrician to treat the problem, knowing that she would not keep her word.

As an undocumented immigrant, Britani, now 20, had no health insurance and could not afford to pay for her treatment in cash. Her only option would be to apply for public benefits, but she had heard from friends that doing so could make her a target for deportation or jeopardize her pending green card application. So she sat tight, hoping the infection would go away on its own.

A few weeks later, Britani shook her husband awake in the middle of the night and told him to get his mother in the next room. They returned to find Britani doubled over in pain, her face wet with tears.

“There’s a lot of blood,” Britani said.

When President Trump unleashed his crackdown on immigration, people without legal status scrambled to erase the traces of their existence to avoid being swept up. They stayed home to hide from aggressive new street arrests. And thousands dropped out of welfare programs to steer clear of a policy that posed a less visible threat. Under an expansion of the limits on “public charge,” the administration said it would withhold legalization for undocumented immigrants who had used certain public benefits.

Though undocumented immigrants are ineligible for most welfare programs and have been shown to use those that are available at lower rates than American citizens, the Trump administration said the expansion was necessary to discourage people who could not support themselves financially from moving to the United States. “Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge,” Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II, the acting director of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, said at the time.

The policy contained exemptions for some vulnerable groups, including pregnant women. But doctors and public health officials say that many undocumented women are convinced nonetheless that their chances of legalization will be diminished, and they worry that immigration officers, who are often seen at hospitals along the border, could target them for deportation.

The result, they say, is an escalating climate of fear that is having disastrous consequences for the health of pregnant women and their babies.

Within days of when the public charge policy became public, followed by wall-to-wall coverage on Spanish-language news outlets and dire warnings on social media, medical clinics saw no-show rates for prenatal care appointments rise sharply. Midwives say that requests for home births from undocumented women who wanted to avoid going to a hospital soared. Doctors said they saw a spike in the number of women arriving in emergency rooms with serious complications, or already in labor, without having

The outlook for older women in Australia is dire – but no one seem to care | Jane Caro | Opinion

Every time I speak up publicly about the very real plight facing older women in Australia – as I did on last week’s Q&A – I get inundated with messages on social media. But virtually all of those messages are from other older women. They confide in me their terror of homelessness and the inescapability of their poverty. They tell me of the indignities and humiliations they suffer at the hands of a punitive and indifferent welfare system, and they whisper dark stories of domestic violence, neglected health and isolation. These women are my peers (I am 63). They are the girls I went to school with, my sisters, neighbours, cousins and friends. We all started out with the same hopes and optimism about our future but, for far too many women of my generation, those hopes have turned to ashes.

Covid-19 has made everything worse in all sorts of ways, but it holds particular perils for those of us who are older. There are the losses that cannot be helped – the increase in isolation, the loss of contact with grandchildren and other relatives, and the need to take greater precautions when we venture out – but that is not the worst of it. Covid-19 has both unveiled and accelerated the discrimination and systemic burdens that make women more vulnerable to poverty throughout their lives. A vulnerability that snowballs as we age.

Prior to Covid, women over 55 were already the fastest growing group among the homeless. Research released in August estimated that 400,000 women over the age of 45 currently face this fate. Women who are in the private rental market, who are not employed full time and are a sole parent have a 64% risk of losing the roof over their head. If they have been homeless before, this risk increases to a staggering 83%! These figures are grim, but has anyone noticed? Is there an outcry? Does anyone – apart from the women themselves – actually care?

Education used to be one of feminism’s good news stories. Australian women are among the best educated in the world. However, thanks to Covid, even this may be changing. There has been a drastic fall in university enrolments by women and girls – 86,000 fewer in 2020. That’s not just hopes, dreams and talent going up in smoke, that’s a lifetime of increased earning capacity lost. Male enrolments have fallen too, but at a far lower rate. No doubt female aspirations have not been helped by the federal government’s bizarre decision to price degrees popular with women students beyond reach. And, despite the rhetoric, many women who dreamt of studying the humanities haven’t gone into Stem. It seems many have given up the idea of attending university at all.

The recent budget, touted as all about jobs, did little or nothing to help. It did
