The Best Biodynamic Wines For Clean Wine Lovers

Some of the most chemical-free, sustainable and preservative-free wines you can buy are biodynamic, making them an ideal eco-friendly wine gift. The philosophy of biodynamic farming approaches the vineyard as an organism –using moon phases for planting and pruning decisions, compost and herbal teas to control pests and weeds, and farm animals for grazing and soil renewal. It is a vigorously demanding form of vineyard management and hence there are not many winemakers who farm biodynamically —those who do insist their wines taste more authentic, fresh and more vibrant. Taste preferences aside, these are wines that prize sustainability and natural balance above all else and you can feel good about drinking and gifting them.

Gerard Bertrand Cigalus, 2018: This is a ripe, succulent wine with a savory mouth-watering finish. It has all of the tropical buttery richness of a Chardonnay with the zest freshness of a Sauvignon Blanc—a blend of Chardonnay, Viognier, and Sauvignon Blanc aged for six months in new French oak. Biodynamically farmed (even mules pull the plows to manage the vineyard rows); it has a silky, long finish, wonderfully rich mouthfeel with excellent structure. A deal for around $30. Bertrand also crafts a world-class rose—Gérard Bertrand Clos du Temple 2018: This wine won the 2020 Best Rosé of the World award at the Global Rosé Masters of Drinks Business. It can easily age a decade or more—but if you choose to drink it now you’ll love the wine’s silky vibrancy—ripe with strawberry and spice notes. Bertrand of the wine’s unique bottle shape, “The square base represents the earthly dimension, and transitions to cylindrical form representing the cosmic dimension, in accordance with the principles of biodynamics with proportions inspired by the golden ratio.” Retails for $190 (750mL)

ADAMVS Cabernet Sauvignon, 2016: This is the flagship expression from Adamvs—a liquid reflection of small lot biodynamically farmed vines growing high atop Napa’s Howell Mountain. Proprietors, Denise and Stephen Adams, also own Château Fonplégade in Bordeaux’s famed Saint-Émilion wine region—and they look to viticulturist Michael Wolf and winemaker Philippe Melka to craft terroir-drive wines. This one shines with purity of fruit, warm spices, silky tannins and a core of blue-black fruits that is undeniably delicious.

Embruix de Vall Llach Priorat, 2017: The word Embruix means “bewitching” in Catalan, a nod to the moon phase aspects of biodynamic winemaking. Grown in Spain’s hot and sunny Priorat region, this wine is densely woven with spice and plum notes; it has a rich jammy core supported by tannins and spice. A blend of exclusively estate fruit: Grenache, Merlot, Syrah, Carignan, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Domaine de Beaurenard Rasteau 2018: This Rhone red is a blend of mostly Grenache (80%) with a bit of Syrah and Mourvèdre woven in. The wine reflects the scrubby landscape with a richly aromatic nose of wild berries and a concentrated but elegant palate

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s New Beauty Brand Focuses On Clean Formulas

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has had ties to the beauty industry for years now. She first dipped her toe in by collaborating with Marks & Spencer’s Autograph line to create a range of makeup products in 2016. Since then, she has launched her own beauty site and has been the face of brands including Hourglass and bareMinerals. And now the star is launching her very own beauty brand in a move that seems like a natural progression. Here’s everything we know about Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s Clean Beauty Collaborative so far.

The news was announced this week, and so far we have limited details. What we do know is that Clean Beauty Collaborative will launch in spring 2021, and that Huntington-Whiteley partnered with leading synthetic biotechnology company in clean health and beauty markets, Amyris Inc., to make this happen. Amyris already has a presence in the clean beauty sector, as it is responsible for brands such as Biossance skincare and Pipette baby and mother care brands, which Rosie herself has worked with.

Huntington-Whiteley will be the new brand’s Chief Creative Officer and Caroline Hadfield, who heads up Amyris’ clean skin care sector, will be its Chief Executive Officer, it has been reported.

A press announcement published on industry platform Diary Directory read: “Clean Beauty Collaborative will develop a new line of cosmetics products using the brand Rose Inc., and build on the Rose Inc. content platform.”

Rose Inc follows a similar structure to famous beauty website Into The Gloss; interviewing women in the industry and beyond about their beauty regimes. It takes a noticeably “clean” stance, and even has a shoppable section that sells clean formulas to a U.S. audience.

Speaking about the project, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley commented: “I am passionate about responsible beauty products that are healthy for people and the planet. Working with Pipette this past year, I have been thoroughly impressed with Amyris’ technology and its leadership in creating sustainable, non-toxic and trustworthy products.”

More to follow.

Does a Clean Beauty Formulation Really Make a Difference in Skincare? | W Magazine

Vogue 1977

Photo by Arthur Elgort/Conde Nast via Getty Images

When Lesley Thornton, the founder of clean and sustainable beauty brand Klur, worked as a makeup artist for MAC, Estée Lauder, and Laura Mercier in the early Aughts, skincare was barely a conversation in the industry. The resounding emphasis was heavy on smoky eyes and layers of foundation—but if one of her clients asked how to care for their skin, Thornton couldn’t help them. The Compton, California native began making formulations at home for her patrons to use between makeovers; they were such a hit that the 37-year-old got her aesthetician’s license and launched Klur in 2019.

The skincare line, which pays special attention to melanated tones, consists of eight products (the latest being the Supreme Seed mask, which dropped in early October). This Black-owned brand has become one of the most hyped and beloved new beauty labels among junkies and newbies alike. So how did Klur stack up to the buzz? Four W editors put the Symmetry Fluid skin supplement, Gentle Matter cleanser, and Supreme Seed mask to the test, and gave their honest opinions.

Maryam Lieberman

How have you seen your skin change in the past six months, if it has at all? Have you adjusted your skincare regimen to address this shift?

In the last six months, my skin has been much drier than usual. I’m also still carrying over some pigmentation from the summer that I’m trying to control. It’s challenging because it’s still hot and sunny in Los Angeles; the heat creeps up on my skin, even when I’m using sunscreen and wearing a hat. I’m more keen to use gentle products nowadays, versus products that make my skin burn when dealing with pigmentation/melasma issues. To combat my dry skin it’s obviously not just going to be all about products. I force myself to double up on water and I’ve been drinking lately an unpleasant but helpful green juice (romaine, lemon, green apple, and celery) every morning to hydrate.

What cleanser, serums, and masks do you currently use regularly, if any?

I rotate products every three months but always go back to Sisley’s Cleansing Milk with Sage as well as their Ecological Complex. I wait a few minutes after the Ecological Complex is absorbed and I’ll add a moisturizer like Crème de La Mer or Natura Bisse Diamond Cream. If I have heavy pigmentation that flares up, I replace the Ecological Complex with Erasa XEP-30 for two weeks. The masks that I rotate are the Sisley Velvet Sleeping Mask, Chanel Le Mask and Charlotte Tilbury’s Goddess Clay Mask—the Velvet mask for repair and the Chanel and Tilbury masks (both of them are clay masks) I use to dry out any excess oils or eruptions on my skin.

How did the Klur Gentle Matter cleanser work for you?

Beautifully and gently. I loved it. Even on the days when I wore makeup, I felt it took everything off, but didn’t dry out my skin.

What did the serum
