Five Jobs In Tech For Women Who Don’t Want To Code

If you’re a woman who wants to learn how to code, please do. We need you. But if you don’t want to code, there are still plenty of ways to work in the future-proof tech industry.

Thankfully, there are organizations working hard to change the fact that there’s only one woman software engineer for every five men. Black Girls Code, Women Who Code, Girls Who Code, and many other nonprofit groups are ensuring that more females will enter the fields of computer science, robotics, and software engineering.

Still, there are plenty of women who don’t want to learn to code at the skill level required to make it those professions. Part of the gender gap in tech is due to the fact that many people equate a career in tech with highly technical skills. Women from disadvantaged backgrounds and those who don’t live in tech hubs might not know about the non-technical roles available to them.

With the tech industry booming during COVID-19, it’s clear that more women deserve to know about the amazing opportunities that fit their skills and passions — with no coding required. Here are five jobs to consider.

Customer success manager.

Customer success is an emerging field whose importance will continue to grow. 72% of businesses say that improving customer success is their top priority. It’s no wonder. Acquiring a new customer can cost six to seven times as much as retaining an existing one.

Customer success managers are in charge of helping software customers get the most out of their subscriptions. This differs from customer service because they work proactively (not reactively). CS managers speak with customers individually, host group webinars, and create training materials to guide customers through the software’s features.

Average base pay: $65k.

Digital marketer.

Within marketing, there are dozens of roles, including copywriting, graphic design, ad management, and marketing automation. Even the more technical responsibilities within marketing like automation, data integration, and attribution don’t require coding skills, because popular marketing apps are designed to be easy to use and integrate.

While there are lots of opportunities for creative women in marketing, women who are great at project management can succeed, too, because much of digital marketing is about pulling the right talents together.

Average base pay: $54k.

Resources and communities:

UX researcher.

As someone who’s overheard UX researchers conducting calls at a coworking space, I can say that UX researchers have a pretty fun job. They interview customers about new features and product updates, and they watch them interact with the software over screen-sharing video conferences to spot any usability issues. Based on what they discover, UX researchers create wireframes and task flows to help guide developers’ work.

Average base pay: $94k.

The PS5 officially launched yesterday on November 12, and social media has been flooded with pictures of people receiving their next-gen console. Those who pre-ordered the machine directly from Sony also received a pleasant little surprise in the form of a “thank you” card with a gift code, which gives you free avatars when you redeem it on the PlayStation store.  

“Congratulations on PlayStation 5. The big day is finally here,” the back of the card reads. “Thank you for your support. We really hope you enjoy your journey. As a small token of our appreciation, please visit PlayStationstore.com to redeem a special gift. Welcome to the next generation of gaming.”

The code is said to give you eight “unique avatars”, but there does appear to be a few reports of players who are unable to redeem it. Since the console arrived, many players have taken to Reddit and Twitter to say that the code they received doesn’t appear to be working. 

User Felder71 says when they tried to redeem it, “PSN said it was inactive.” While they chalk it up to potentially being a result of not having set up the PS5 yet, several others in the replies claim they’re experiencing the same problem. Some also say that they get an error message stating the code has already been redeemed. It could very well be that the code hasn’t been activated yet in some regions since the console has just launched. Hopefully, players will still be able to get their free goodies in due course.

If you’ve been looking at the fall fashion and lifestyle magazines that have been published over the past few weeks, you’ll notice that a lot of the covers feature Black people. That, says Robin Givhan — longtime fashion writer for the Washington Post and now a senior critic-at-large for the paper — is no coincidence.

The fashion world, like many industries and institutions, is experiencing a reckoning on race. Condé Nast, the 800-pound gorilla of lifestyle and luxury publishing, was shaken several months ago when Adam Rapoport, the editor of one of its flagship publications, Bon Appetit, stepped down after his staff accused him of racist and bullying behavior. Then it was Anna Wintour’s turn; the editor in chief of Vogue and artistic director of Condé Nast was taken to task for not being racially inclusive — on her pages and with her staff. The luxury Italian fashion houses Gucci and Prada were criticized for producing designs that evoked blackface minstrelsy. And so on.

Recently, Givhan wrote a piece in the Washington Post’s magazine looking at the intersection of fashion and race, and at some of the initiatives that have been established to diversify fashion, from the runway to the boardroom. So on this bonus episode of the podcast, I talked to her about what’s happening in fashion right now, and what brought the industry to this moment. Our conversation has been condensed and edited for clarity.

The September issues of glossy magazines, even ones that aren’t strictly fashion, have always been a big deal. This year, a lot of different covers featured Black people, and it feels like it’s happening all at once. What’s happening here?

In many ways, I think British Vogue has really been a leader in this regard. Edward Enninful has been at the helm of the magazine for around three years. When he took on that position, as the first Black person to take on that role, he went in with a very intentional desire to make British Vogue more diverse. That was part of his mission statement. And he also wanted to maintain the same aspirational, fantasy aspect of the magazine. He simply wanted to invite more people into that fantasy.

And I do think that the successes that he has had with the covers from the very beginning did sort of spark a greater sense of diversity on the covers of other magazines and sister publications. But I do think that we take what Edward was already doing, and then you couple it with the changing cultural ground today. In many ways, it’s almost sort
