Best PS5 Gifts For 2020: PlayStation Gift Ideas, Games, And More

The PlayStation 5 released in November, kicking off a new generation of gaming for PlayStation fans. The PS5 launch included an exciting lineup of titles like Demon’s Souls and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but it was also marked by a disappointing lack of stock available at retailers. Unless you were someone who preordered as soon as listings went live in September, you’ve pretty much been out of luck the past few months. There have been PS5 restocks, including ones on launch day and Black Friday, but those have been prone to site crashes and quick sellout. We’ve included the PS5 as part of our PlayStation gift guide this year as Sony has promised more PS5 inventory will be sent to retailers before the end of the year, but just keep in mind you may have trouble buying the new console. (See our PS5 restock guide for more details.)

However, you may also be shopping for someone who was lucky enough to buy a PS5 and has happily been playing it for the past month or so. Maybe your PlayStation fan is satisfied to keep gaming on their PS4 for the time being. Either way, you might be wondering what to gift them this year, and to help you out, we’ve rounded up the best PlayStation gifts for 2020. Naturally, the PS5 is on this list, but there’s no shortage of games, accessories, collectibles, and merchandise available as well.

This holiday season is absolutely packed with huge PS4 and PS5 games, and there are plenty of new figures, art books, and more for gamers to add to their collection. Marquee titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Cyberpunk 2077, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla join the vast library of great PlayStation games along with gems from earlier this year like The Last of Us Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, and Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Holiday gaming gift guide: What to know about the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch

So many games, so little time. From bottom left, clockwise: Xbox Series S (white); Xbox Series X (black); Nintendo Switch; PlayStation 4; Xbox One; Nintendo Switch Lite. (Thomas Wilde Photo)

This is the first holiday season for the ninth generation of video game consoles, as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X (XSX) have recently hit the market, and Nintendo’s hybrid system the Switch is still a hot seller. The PS5 and XSX are likely to be two of the most-wanted gifts this year, for everyone from kids to nerdy adults.

That, however, assumes that you can find them. Both the PS5 and XSX are currently in short supply at every major retailer, with new shipments selling out almost faster than they can be put on sale. This is fairly typical for any new gaming console for the first couple of months, but in 2020, it’s been exacerbated by scalpers, some of whom are running botnets in order to buy up all of the available consoles as quickly as possible. You can get a PS5 or XSX fairly easily right now — as long as you don’t mind paying vastly inflated prices on auction sites.

Xbox Series X/S review: Microsoft’s new console is a big step forward, but not a leap

It arguably isn’t worth the hassle. In the last couple of generations, the first year has traditionally been the roughest for a new console, as both manufacturers and game developers work the unexpected bugs out of the hardware. That can mean physical defects, design flaws, or outright system failure. Traditionally, disc drives have been especially prone to issues, although that’s not as big a problem now as it was in earlier gaming consoles.

It’s also going to be a while before each library of games catches up to the new tech’s potential. As a result, most of the go-to launch titles for both the PS5 and XSX, such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, are also playable on previous-generation systems. They’ll look better and might have a few extra features on the PS5/XSX, but you won’t miss out on any actual gameplay by staying back.

As such, if you’re looking to buy a new next-generation console strictly for yourself, your best shot is to wait until next year. Let the holiday hype die down, wait to see how the launch-edition hardware holds up over time, and take advantage of the wealth of holiday flash sales that can be found on virtually every digital storefront right now. It’s not a bad time to pick up a PlayStation 4 Pro or an Xbox One X, either; one of the best times to crack into a particular generation’s hardware is right at its end, as stores work to clear out their inventories.

If you’ve got to have the next big thing now, though, or if you’ve got a kid, spouse, or relative who does, here’s what you probably want to know before you jump into the next-generation pool. This is

Black Friday PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X gift guide

Getting someone the newest consoles as a gift this holiday is not realistic. It’s possible. You can make it happen if you’re determined and lucky. But if someone in your life really wants an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5, they’re probably going to have to track down one themselves. But this doesn’t mean you cannot contribute to the latest generation of fun.

The console is just the start. And both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X already have a robust lineup of accessories to expand their capabilities. Here are some gifts you should consider as part of our holiday gift guide coverage.

Xbox Series X

Wireless gaming headset

Lucidsound LS35X
Where to buy: Amazon

When it comes to wireless gaming headsets, Microsoft works with a number of third-party peripheral manufacturers. But I’ve always preferred LucidSound’s offerings for its comfort and ease-of-use. The LS35X has big dials for controlling volume, and its wireless connection gives it a low-latency connection across Xbox One or Xbox Series X.

SATA SSD with USB cable for backward-compatible games

Crucial BX500 1TB
Where to buy: Amazon USB 3.1 Gen 2 SATA USB cable
Where to buy:

A major shortcoming for both consoles is a lack of storage space and the inability to use external drives to run next-gen games. But that means you shouldn’t take up your precious gigabytes with last-generation releases because those will run off of a USB drive. And if you use an external SSD, you can still get much shorter load times. The problem is that external USB SSDs are expensive. That’s OK because we have a solution. Grab an internal SATA SSD like Crucial’s reliable BX500 and combine it with a SATA USB cable. Make sure the cable is USB 3.1, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will load up in seconds.

A great way to play your Xbox games even when you can’t use the TV

Razer Kishi
Where to buy: Walmart

I have two kids, so I rarely get to play games on my high-quality television. We’re usually using that display to watch PJ Masks or Sheriff Callie’s Wild West or Blippi. That’s why I like the Kishi, which turns my phone into something closer to a Nintendo Switch. This enables me to play games from the cloud using Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, or I can stream games over my local network direct from my Xbox. It’s an indispensable tool for me — even in a time when I’m not traveling.

Media remote

PDP Talon Media Remote for Xbox
Where to buy: Amazon

The Xbox Series X/S both have IR receivers, so if you have a universal remote, that’ll work to control your media apps. Likewise, if you have an Xbox One media remote, that’ll work on the new consoles. But if you’re looking for a dedicated way to control Netflix, Disney+, and more, PDP has a new media remote available that will control your

The best PlayStation 5 accessories you can buy

playstation 5 hardware

The new Sony PlayStation 5 is here, but you’ll need more than just the console itself. The only thing you may not ever need again is the physical version of a game. Whether you go for the full console or the digital edition, you’ll probably need extra controllers, storage, and more. Luckily for you, we’ve got all of the best PlayStation 5 accessories you can get right here.

See also: Sony PlayStation 5 buyer’s guide

The best place to look for accessories is Sony’s first-party lineup. However, we’ve also chosen a few third-party favorites because Sony can’t quite do it all themselves. We’ll cover your storage options, headsets, and controllers just in time for you to get in the game.

Best PlayStation 5 accessories:

Editor’s note: All of these PlayStation 5 accessories were in stock at the time of writing, but we will update the list as we find new options.

Pulse 3D wireless headset

playstation 5 accessories pulse 3d headset

If you’re hoping to tap into your favorite stealth games on the PlayStation 5 or compete against friends online, you’ll need a top-notch headset. This first option is Sony’s own design and it matches the signature black and white styling of the PS5. These cans are specifically designed to deliver 3D audio thanks to Tempest 3D AudioTech. Sony’s Pulse 3D headphones even feature a pair of built-in microphones so you can keep up with your friends.

As for connectivity, you can either connect wirelessly to your PlayStation 4 or 5 or go for a wired connection with the included 3.5mm cable. The Pulse 3D headset should last in the neighborhood of 12 hours if you go wireless. It’s currently nearly impossible to track down this headset, but we’re expecting more stock shortly.

SteelSeries Arctis 7P

ps5 accessories steelseries arctis 7p

If you prefer third-party accessories, SteelSeries is about as good as you can get. The Arctis 7P is a great alternative to the Pulse 3D headset, and it’s specifically designed for the PlayStation 5. The Arctis 7P is built for ultra-low-latency gaming thanks to lossless 2.4GHz audio and it even manages 24 hours of battery life.

You can also take your SteelSeries Arctis 7P on the go, though you’ll have to use the included dongle to connect to your phone. It connects via USB-C as well, so it won’t work too well for iPhone users. SteelSeries developed custom 40mm drivers for the Arctis 7P, and you can stay in command with handy controls on the earcups.

DualSense wireless controller

playstation 5 accessories dualsense controller

One of the most important PlayStation 5 accessories you can get is a second controller. After all, how many people play alone all the time? Even if it’s only for occasional use, you’ll probably want a second DualSense wireless controller. Like most PlayStation products, the DualSense is completely redesigned to match the new PlayStation 5. It bears the same black and white finish as the console, complete with blue accents.

Here Are The Accessories You’ll Need For Your PlayStation 5 When It Comes Out

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is all set to hit the shelves this week in a lot of regions. Although we don’t have any info about its launch here in India we still think it’s a good idea to check out some of the accessories that you might need at your disposal when the console comes out.

We think you should consider picking up these additional accessories to ensure you get the most out of your brand new console.

PS5 DualSense

Every PS5 purchase will come with a controller. Sony has always bundled only one controller with its consoles and this time it’s no different. That being said, we always recommend getting another controller because, well, it’s fun to play multiplayer games like FIFA with your friends and you can’t do that without another controller. As of now, we’re not sure how much the controller will cost here in India, but we’ll update the pricing here once it goes official.

PlayStation Plus

PlayStation Plus© Twitter/ @vjeranpavic

We’re super excited about Sony’s PlayStation Plus Collection which is essentially a digital library of games that came out during the lifespan of the PS4. But for that, you’ll need an active PlayStation Plus subscription, so be sure to grab it as soon as you get your new console. We’ll update official pricing once it goes official here.

PS Camera

PS Camera© Sony

In case you’re interested in streaming your gameplay online on platforms like Twitch, YouTube, or Facebook, then we suggest getting a camera as well. For the PS5, Sony’s PS Camera itself is a great option to consider. This camera will also allow you to remove the background of your camera’s feed and replace it.

An External Hard Drive

The PlayStation 5 has limited space and we’re not entirely sure about how the SSD expansion will work on the console. So for now, we suggest you grab an external hard drive to store your older PS4 games. You won’t be able to use the HDD to play new PS5 titles but it’ll be a temporary home for your old library of games.

Here are the accessories you’ll need for your PlayStation 5

Sony’s PlayStation 5 launches on Thursday, November 12th. Whether you secured one ahead of launch day or plan to buy one during the holiday season, you might want to consider picking up additional accessories to ensure you get the most out of your brand new console.

First, there’s the controller. Every new PS5 includes one DualSense controller. Unlike the DualShock controllers, the DualSense has a two-color scheme and a more ergonomic design. The controller also features adaptive triggers, a built-in microphone, and haptic feedback, with some games taking advantage of the controller’s features to provide more immersion.

In addition to working with the PS5, the DualSense can connect to Android devices wirelessly. The controller will also connect wirelessly to a PC if your computer supports Bluetooth. If not, you can connect the DualSense to a PC using a USB cable.

The controller is $70, which is $10 more than the DualShock 4. The DualSense is a good successor to the PS4’s controller, given all the improvements that come with it. If you already owned a PS4 or own a DualShock 4, you can still use the controller on the PS5, but it will only work while playing PS4 games.

If you are interested in using your PS5 to live-stream video games or broadcast your gameplay with friends, you’ll want to pick up the PS5 HD Camera, which is $60. It includes dual 1080p lenses and is a successor to the PS4 camera. The camera also allows you to remove the background of your camera’s feed and replace it with something else.

Speaking of streaming, let’s quickly talk about games. Sony will have a good chunk of games playable at launch, including some highly anticipated titles, which we will list below. If you are curious to know the full list of games available on the console at launch, we have compiled an extensive list of games coming to Sony’s next-gen console at launch and other games coming out within the next two years. But here are a few PlayStation exclusives coming to the console at launch:

Sony will also debut the PlayStation Plus Collection, a digital library of some of the most popular games released during the PS4’s lifespan. But you will need to have an active PlayStation Plus subscription to access the service. You can grab a one-year subscription for $29 at Eneba or $30 at CDKeys right now.

Shifting back to accessories, the PS5 also has its own media remote. The PS5 can double as a device to stream movies and videos, or if you buy the PS5 with a disc drive, you can watch Blu-ray discs. The PS5 will have a ton of streaming apps available at launch, including Apple TV Plus, Crunchyroll, and Hulu, so if you plan to

Unboxing the PlayStation 5 and its accessories

It’s going to be a busy holiday season with two next-gen consoles set to launch within days of each other. Microsoft will be first out of the gate with its Xbox Series X on Nov. 10 and Sony will follow afterward with the PlayStation 5’s release on Nov. 12.

With these highly anticipated machines, gamers want to know what’s in the box. (I mean this in a non-“Seven” Brad Pitt kind of way.) Sony sent the PS5 ahead of time in order for me to write a review on the console. I had a chance to take it out of the box and explore what the system can do. To prepare players for what to expect, the video above shows an unboxing of the standard edition console with the disc drive and four accessories available for the PS5: the DualSense wireless controller, DualSense Charging Station, Pulse 3D Headset and HD Camera.
