Katie Holmes Wore An All-Denim Look With Fashion’s Most Popular Shoe

On Monday, Katie Holmes stepped out on an uncharacteristically warm New York City day wearing head-to-toe denim: a faded denim button-down shirt with a pair of equally faded jeans. Not only did she nail the double-denim look, but she paired it with spring-summer’s most popular shoe: Bottega Veneta braided Lido sandals in yellow. As fashion legend would have it, the Canadian tuxedo first came to be when White Christmas‘ Bing Crosby was almost denied entry into a luxury hotel in Vancouver in 1951 for wearing a denim-on-denim ensemble. According to i-D, upon his return to the States, his friends shared the story with Levi Strauss, who, in turn, designed Crosby his own custom denim suit. Since then, the trend has seen many iterations, most notably including a take by Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake on the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards red carpet which included a denim corset (not unlike the one Danish cult brand Ganni included in its spring ‘20 collection) and a matching fedora. Then, of course, there’s Rihanna, the unsung queen of the Canadian tuxedo, who’s styled denim-on-denim in every possible way, shape, and form. (In particular, the singer-turned-fashion designer has worn her Matthew Adams Dolan denim trench coat on more than one occasion.) Holmes, though, took a more laid-back approach to the Americana trend.

We can’t say we’re surprised that Holmes would stick with the classics here. Over the last few years, the Dawson’s Creek actress has showcased a number of low-key, yet irresistibly stylish outfits by adding a dash of the unexpected. Most recently, on Election Day, she was spotted wearing a covetable camel coat by sustainable fashion label Nanushka, which she paired with a bucket bag. Before that, Holmes made a case for sweats paired with blazers, cashmere bras with cardigans, and sweaters with cutouts. We shouldn’t be surprised that she now paired a classic all-denim suit with the trendiest sandals in fashion.

how Crocs became the it shoe of 2020

Fashion’s latest flirtation is with a brand of shoes that back in 2010 the Wall Street Journal referred to as “vermin” and in the same year ranked 22nd in Time Magazine’s “50 Worst Inventions” list. 

But Crocs’ faithful fans have never lost hope. Among the brand’s legion of disciples – the Crocerati – are a smattering of famous faces, most notably Rihanna, Ariana Grande, and even the Duchess of Cambridge back in 2007.  

Since their inception in 2002, the  plastic clogs responsible for inducing the Marmite effect – you either love them or loathe them – have enjoyed quite the journey. The company lost £167million in 2008 and in 2014, announced that it was having to close 100 stores amid falling sales.

Fast forward just a few years to 2016 and Crocs had their reputation rehabilitated by none other than Christopher Kane, who incorporated the plastic shoes into his spring/summer 2017 show. “Crocs are arguably the most comfortable shoe,” Scottish-born Kane said at the time, “I love that they are slightly awkward and might be perceived by some as ugly. They have a very naive and childlike shape, which I especially like when they look extra clunky on the foot.”

One year later and streetwear supremo Demna Gvesalia sent canary-yellow platformed Crocs down the runway for Balenciaga’s spring/summer 2018 show which further cemented the plastic clog’s newly acquired fashion status.

“It’s a very innovative shoe,” the Georgian native said backstage after the show, “It’s light, it’s a one-piece foam mould and to me these kind of techniques and working with these kind of materials is very Balenciaga.”

Following their sudden prominence on the fashion menu, Crocs managed to then garner an impressive cadre of collaborations. Musicians Post Malone, Bad Bunny, and most recently Justin Bieber have all teamed up with the brand, with Bieber’s canary yellow pair selling out in a record 90 minutes.  

“I wear Crocs all the time, so designing my own pair came naturally,” Bieber told Women’s Wear Daily about his collaboration. “With these Crocs, I just focused on making something cool that I wanted to wear.”

Indeed the figures prove that the heinous is hot right now: searches for Crocs increased by 32 per cent last month, according to the fashion search engine Lyst, which called them the “It shoe” of the season. The company’s revenues for Q3 also increased by 36 per cent to $80million, compared with the same period the previous year.  

In our new comfort-first world, and as we inch closer towards lockdown 2.0, it is most definitely Croc o’clock.

Silicon Valley-Loved Shoe Brand Allbirds Is Expanding into Fashion

If you’re a Silicon Valley exec, a great aunt living in Vermont, or a celebrity who uses their platform responsibly (say, for example, Oprah, Katie Holmes, Kerry Washington or even Barack Obama), you already know about Allbirds and own a style yourself.

For the uninitiated, Allbirds launched a first-of-its-kind sneaker made from merino wool (a natural fiber) in 2016 and has sold over a million pairs since. The brand’s allure? An alchemy of simplicity, comfort, and transparency in—brace yourself, here comes fashion’s equivalent of the word ‘moist‘—sustainability.

When it comes to the ladder, Allbirds has, to their credit, been transparent in exactly how they source its materials since beginning. The only polyester found in their shoes’ laces come from recycled bottles and packaging is made up of 90% cardboard materials. In April, founders Tim Brown and Joey Zwillinger even announced they’d start labeling the carbon output used to create a single pair of shoes, akin to how food packaging signals to consumers the calorie count of what they’re eating.

Earlier today, the brand announced what’s next, and it’s a big leap. AllBirds is now venturing into womenswear and menswear. Specifically, merino-wool based sweaters and cardigans, as well as puffer jackets and T-shirts made using the brand’s patented TrinoXO™ fabric, a natural material harvested from snow crab shells (the world’s second most discarded resource, per Allbirds). Every item in the collection is made from natural and recycled materials.

A press release shared with ELLE.com from Allbirds answers the question of why now, stating: “As the chasm between disposable fast fashion and utilitarian basics has grown, the fashion industry has clung to the same outdated methods that continue to drive excessive carbon emissions, soil depletion, and synthetic waste. So we asked ourselves, why couldn’t we give people clothes they’ll love and simply make them better?”

Allbirds is hardly the first shoe or clothing brand to care about responsibly sourcing their materials. (Fair trade brand Veja launched back in 2003.) However, perhaps, more brands will finally feel the pressure to hold a mirror to themselves and see how they measure up in emitting greenhouse gases, and feel the need to do something about it.

For its part, Adidas has joined the conversation. As ELLE Canada reported in May, Allbirds and Adidas are joining forces to create a sports performance shoe with the lowest-ever carbon footprint by 2021.

To learn more about about sustainability in fashion, the fashion campaign for Allbirds’s launch thoughtfully stars environmental activists as part of the brand’s Allgood Collective. Signature shoe, clothing line for Puma future possibility

While the details of LaMelo Ball’s deal with Puma have not yet been fully revealed, though reports indicate it may be as much as a nine-figure deal, there are certain expectations that many assume would come with Ball’s signing. Most notably, a player of his popularity would at least get his own signature line of clothing if not a signature shoe.

Those specific details were not made available in the immediate aftermath of Ball joining the brand. While a collaboration between Puma and Ball on shirts and sweatshirts will come out on Nov. 18, the day of the draft, it is not a long-term project…yet.

However, Puma’s Global Director of Brand and Marketing Adam Petrick spoke in a piece for Esquire by Gerald Flores about the possibility of a future Ball-specific line with Puma.

“Petrick added that he definitely can foresee signature LaMelo products coming down the line, with the plan to establish the player both on and off the basketball court.”

While it’s always a gamble for a company to give an athlete a signature shoe, Ball seems like an athlete that would be a shoo-in for one. Williamson, who signed a smaller deal than the rumored deal for Ball, is set for his own signature shoe with Air Jordan in the coming months.

In reality, the collab between Ball and Puma in November will likely serve as a trial of whether Ball can sell as a signature athlete. While his popularity is unquestioned, that doesn’t always translate to sales. If his popularity does lead to big sales, his signature line could come sooner than later.
