Philly’s conscious shopping trend helping Black-owned businesses

South Philadelphia native Shannon Maldonado remembers when customers cleaned her home-and-life shop, Yowie, wholly out of inventory earlier this year.

The boom coincided with anti-racist demonstrations that brought thousands of Philadelphians out to protest police brutality and show support for Black-owned businesses like the South 4th Street shop.

“Our business grew in the last eight months, which, you know, I almost feel weird saying, because it’s such a strange time,” said Maldonado, who started the business in 2016. “But we’ve been working so hard just to get our name out there for so long. So it felt good to have the support.”

Yowie is just one of the many Philadelphia businesses that stand to benefit from support during the 2020 holiday season. A recent survey from Deloitte found that 43% of shoppers in the city prefer shopping at local retailers rather than national chains.

“This year probably taught all of us a lot of things about how we want to spend our time and spend our money,” said Maldonado. “More than ever, people are going to be shopping intentionally.”

Businesses like Black woman-owned Sable Collective, Harriet’s Bookshop, and Marsh and Mane reported similar rushes earlier this year — surges of interest that appear to have continued.

Dorothea Gamble co-owns Trunc, a shop in Northern Liberties that sells the work of local creators, with her partner Dagmar Mitchell. The pandemic challenged them to be more efficient. Gamble said she and her partner have been more critical about their merchandise and expenses.

“You do have to keep on top of things, but not like now,” said Gamble. “There’s no wiggle room, and your focus has to be sharp as a tack.”

The 65-year-old Black woman said the business did not get the push driven by increased anti-racist awareness that Yowie and others received, but more recently, they’ve seen a spike in interest.

The momentum ought to continue through the holidays, said Gamble.

“These last couple, three months have really been phenomenal,” the entrepreneur said. “We’re expecting a pretty decent Christmas.”

Prince Charles calls for an end to the ‘trend of throw-away clothing’ | UK News

The Prince of Wales has called on shoppers and manufacturers to help stop the “extraordinary trend of throw-away clothing” during an interview with fashion bible British Vogue.

Prince Charles, who is well-known for his double-breasted suits and for sending his clothes to be mended rather than throwing them away, joked about his timeless dress sense during an interview with the magazine’s editor-in-chief Edward Enninful.

When asked where his own “sense of style” came from, Prince Charles replied: “I thought I was like a stopped clock – I’m right twice every 24 hours. But… I’m very glad you think it has style. I mind about detail and colour combinations.”

He added: “I happen to be one of those people who’d get shoes – or any item of clothing – repaired if I can, rather than just throw it away.

“When I was a child, we used to take our shoes down to the cobbler in Scotland and would watch with fascination as he ripped the soles off and then put new soles on.”

A new photograph of the prince also features in the December issue of the magazine which goes on sale on Friday. It was taken by fashion photographer Nick Knight, who also photographed the prince with the Queen to mark her 90th birthday.

The interview is part of a push by the prince to encourage everyone to think more carefully about what they buy and how their clothes are made, and promote better training within the textile industries.

Students from the Modern Artisan Project, a fashion training programme co-founded by the Prince’s Foundation, will launch a clothing collection later this month with sustainability at its core.

Prince Charles: ‘We’re at the last hour’

In the interview the prince says the “British fashion textile sector is of enormous importance” and many of the students trained in high-end fashion and sewing skills by the foundation were “snapped up” by firms working in the textile sector.

He added: “But it seems to me there are huge opportunities, particularly now, within the whole sustainable fashion sector, to counter this extraordinary trend of throw-away clothing or throw-away everything, frankly.”

Asked what the “new normal” looked like for him during the pandemic, Charles went on to say: “The consumer has immense power in deciding where to buy from, and the best companies will lead the way, we hope, in demonstrating that if you follow the right principles of operation, not only are you moving more and more towards net zero but also you’re removing pollution from supply chains.”

He gave the example of how around 30 years ago he set firms who have a royal warrant to supply him goods an ultimatum to conform to a set of environmental requirements, or lose their special status.

Prince Charles urges consumers to end ‘extraordinary trend for throwaway fashion’

The Prince of Wales may seem like an unlikely fashion guru, but he has waded into a domain normally inhabited by duchesses and princesses to urge consumers to end “this extraordinary trend of throwaway clothing”.

In an interview with the editor of the British Vogue magazine, Prince Charles has issued a rallying cry for sustainable fashion in which timeless classics can be mended and repaired and worn for years. When asked about his own “sense of style”, the Prince compared himself to “a stopped clock” that told the right time twice a day, suggesting he was accidentally fashionable every now and again.

The Prince, who is 71, also disclosed that he had set up a repair clinic at Dumfries House, his Scottish getaway, for people to bring in clothes for mending. Like the BBC’s popular show, the Repair Shop, the clinic will also mend broken electrical items and other artefacts.

Prince Charles said the British fashion textile sector is “of enormous importance” and told British Vogue’s editor-in-chief Edward Enninful of his determination to revive home-grown, traditional skills of embroidery, sewing, cutting and tailoring. 

“It seems to me,” said the Prince, “there are huge opportunities, particularly now, within the whole sustainable fashion sector, to counter this extraordinary trend of throw-away clothing – or throwaway everything, frankly.”

The comments will be seen as a sideswipe at cut-price retailers who sell cheap, disposable clothing made overseas.  He urged consumers to buy British-made fashion that would also be “removing pollution from supply chains”. 

Prince Charles’s interview is the most recent in a long line of Royal collaborations with Vogue. Editor Mr Enninful is well-known for having collaborated with the Duchess of Sussex when she guest-edited the magazine in September 2019.
