Gift guide to unique finds at Tampa Bay attractions and theme parks

I have been to every theme park in Florida and every attraction in the Tampa Bay area because of my work as an entertainment and events reporter, and their gift shops always catch my eye.

Busch Gardens is especially noteworthy, I think, for the number of home goods found in its stores. Who goes to a theme park to buy a planter of prettily arranged succulents? But there it is, on a special display at the Xcursions store, located near the Iron Gwazi coaster that is poised to set records for the steepest coaster drop when it opens in the spring.

You need an entry ticket to shop at the Tampa theme park, though they do have an online store. Luckily, other Tampa Bay attractions, such as MOSI, the Clearwater Aquarium and the Florida Aquarium invite you to shop without having to pay admission. And their wares are often very cool toys, plush dolls, clothes and hats that you can’t find anywhere else.

Another gift option to consider: admission tickets. Almost every attraction is offering some kind of Florida resident deal right now. For most, it only takes two visits before the ticket pays for itself in unlimited admission. Just be sure to consider the cost of parking into the purchase. If one member of the household has the higher level membership, that gives you free parking and discounts on food and merchandise all year long.

As for the gift shop finds, here’s some of my favorites:

Busch Gardens: You can shop online for their merchandise at buschgardensshop.com/collections/busch-gardens, but if you are in the park, make a point of browsing the gift shops and you will find things are surprisingly affordable. Almost everything I looked at in the Sahara Trading Company was under $25, from cute flamingo spoon rests to a footed bathtub that holds soap, made by the Gainesville company Finchberry, which also had a beautiful lineup of hand-made soaps. You could also find 10 scented incense sticks for $3.98 and succulent plants in pretty containers for $20. Several of the theme park’s stores have a wide variety of fun face masks that could be great stocking stuffers for $10-$15. They include ones that look like the nose and mouth of a gorilla, cheetah and giraffe.

You can find home goods such as this succulent plant and container in Busch Gardens' gift shops.

Museum of Science and Industry: MOSI’s gift shop is fun to see even if you aren’t shopping. There’s a collection of polished stones that you can stuff in a bag for one set price depending on the bag size. There‘s also puzzles and my favorite, rock candy lollipops, which make great stocking stuffers. Since it’s a science museum, this is a great place to find educational toys. 4801 E Fowler Ave., Tampa.

Great Explorations: The Great Explorations gift shop also has lots of toys and games that sneak some education into the fun. They added a digital store to

Expressions Pottery offers unique, local, handcrafted gift options

Expressioins Pottery is a 32-member pottery collective in East Granby, not far from Bradley International Airport.

Expressions Pottery Workshop was established as a co-op in 1972 by 25 potters, and has grown to provide a warm and friendly facility to local potters, including members, renters and students. Potters represent a range of experience from beginners to extremely accomplished.

Pottery methods practiced at the studio include high-fire stoneware, woodfire, and the lower fire primitive methods of raku and saggar.

“We have a studio space and a sales gallery associated with our studio,” said Juliet Clark, member and past president of the collective. The organization also holds classes.

Although many things have changed for Expressions due to COVID, like for so many other small businesses, the collective is in operation, and offers a unique shopping alternative for the holidays.

“One can find a beautiful selection of handmade bowls, mugs, platters, sculpture, jewelry, and lamps,” said Clarke. As a result of COVID, Expressions is also now offering a selection of handmade masks.

Expressions potters come from throughout the Farmington Valley, according to Clarke.

“We are artisans coming together for the good of the community,” she said.  Giving back to their community, members participate in an annual Empty Bowls event for East Granby.

Expressions is located at 9 School Street in East Granby. The studio is open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., until Christmas.  Visit  www.expressionspottery.com to learn more.

Air Canada just launched the Gift of Travel, an integrated initiative that pays homage to the actions of community heroes who are making a memorable impact when helping their fellow Canadians during Covid-19. The program focuses on hope and optimism to raise funds and Aeroplan points for Canadian charitable organizations and it also offers people dreaming of travel a new flexible travel pass product.

“Canadians from across the country have shown remarkable resilience, solidarity and generosity in the face of COVID-19 and we were inspired hearing stories of people who dedicated their time and energy to caring for others, making a memorable impact on other people’s lives. We are proud to launch this campaign with our Gift of Travel video featuring heartwarming stories of community heroes and share the gift of travel through a message of hope and optimism from our employees as we all look forward to brighter days ahead,” said Arielle Meloul-Wechsler, Executive Vice President, Chief Human Resources and Communications Officer at Air Canada. “We are also proud to continue our long-standing effort through the Air Canada Foundation in supporting communities through its inaugural Gift of Travel auction and the annual Aeroplan Matching Campaign.”

The Gift of Travel campaign also features stories on Air Canada’s social media platforms that center on the inspirational work Air Canada employees are doing to make a difference in their own communities.

Gift of Travel Auction

On December 1, 2020 the Air Canada Foundation will launch its first ever online Gift of Travel Auction. Other auction items include an incredible kids’ ride-on airplane and a private dinner with one of Air Canada’s celebrated Canadian Chefs.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the Gift of Travel Auction will be distributed by the Air Canada Foundation to Canadian charitable organizations that are focused on the health and wellness of children and youth.

Moon Ga Young Shows Off Her Unique Fashion Sense In Upcoming Drama “True Beauty”

tvN’s upcoming Wednesday-Thursday drama “True Beauty” has unveiled a new glimpse of Moon Ga Young in character!

Based on the hit webtoon of the same name, “True Beauty” is a romantic comedy about a girl named Lim Ju Gyeong (Moon Ga Young) who zealously uses makeup to hide her bare face and combat her insecurities about her looks. ASTRO‘s Cha Eun Woo will star in the drama as Lee Su Ho, a popular student who has his own emotional wounds, while Hwang In Yeob will play Han Seo Jun, an untamable rebel with a surprisingly warm heart.

On November 23, the drama released new stills of Moon Ga Young as Lim Ju Gyeong. In the photos, Lim Ju Gyeong grins sheepishly with a bare face, and her bizarre outfits are both rustic and cute.

When she isn’t posing as the perfect goddess, she looks like a normal teenager in boxy shirts and baggy jackets. She likes to keep her outfit comfortable and casual with an oversized t-shirt over a long-sleeved t-shirt, and she has a solid preference for colorful pants and bold shirts with skeleton designs.

“True Beauty” premieres on December 9 at 10:30 p.m. KST and will be available with English subtitles on Viki.

In the meantime, check out a teaser for the drama below!

Football: Newton caps off unique perfect season in convincing fashion

The lights at Newton’s football field stayed on longer than usual Friday evening after its team capped off a 42-7 win over Mountain Lakes.

That extra time gave Newton some extra time to reflect on what was a strange, trying season for everyone throughout the country.

It was a scene that, six months ago, Newton could not even imagine.

Over the summer, coach Matt Parzero was one of several potential candidates to have his position cut from the school district as the pandemic took its toll financially. Overwhelming support from the players and community proved just how much it had its coach’s back.

Newton would find another hurdle in the form of an early-season shutdown, missing the first two games of the season.

“There was a lot of uncertainty,” Parzero said. “That’s for sure. We knew that it could end at any time. We saw teams around us get shut down and, especially at this point of the year, there’s no coming back from that.”

It was never easy for Newton but, through it all, it braved its way to perfection. Friday night’s dominant win over Mountain Lakes was just the perfect end to an imperfect 2020.

“To have this game for these guys is an outstanding cap to a season,” Parzero said. “I know guys are disappointed there are no true section champions and having a chance to play in a bowl game. But they made the most of it. They focused on what we did have and not what they didn’t have.”

The victory also marked Newton’s last game as the school district announced Friday that it would be reverting to all-virtual learning and that all extracurricular activities.

In a way, it was a comforting thought that this moment was the last time Newton would take its football field. After so many trials and tribulations, Newton could finish its season on its own terms without having to look over its shoulder when the next shutdown would be arriving.

“You don’t know when you have to start collecting equipment as a coach,” Parzero said. “Not too many teams get that luxury to finish their last game at home and finish off an undefeated season.

“You never know when that moment is going to be. We talked a lot about taking advantage of opportunities that are presented. It was a different approach this year. They saw that it could be taken away at any time but they made the most of it.”

Added senior Peyton Nolan, “We topped off a perfect season and it’s the best thing that could have happened this year.”

Even without a sectional title, Newton played as though everything was on the line Friday night. The offense garnered over 600 yards of total offense with Nolan scoring four times and the Jack Young-Aaron Fantasia connecting for two scores.

Defensively Newton’s only misstep was allowing a touchdown on a halfback pass. Outside of that, the unit intercepted three passes and only allowed two red zone trips all

Looking for a Diwali gift? Opt for this unique health insurance card! – brand stories

It’s that time of the year again when fairy lights adorn the cityscape, there is a slight nip in the air, and the markets are buzzing with activity. Diwali is synonymous with laughter, celebrations, family gatherings, sweets and also buying gifts for the people who matter to you. Picking gifts that are meaningful and special is easier said than done but, thankfully, gone are the days when people had little choice when it came to gifting options.

In this age, Diwali gifting has assumed a whole new dimension and there are myriad ways in which you can make your friends and family members feel cared for during the festive season. One way is by gifting them health insurance coverage. At a time when health concerns have amplified due to a global pandemic, there has been an awakening of sorts about the importance of being prepared for any unwelcome surprises that life throws at us.

Why should you gift health insurance?

While nothing can match the joy of being gifted something that you have been eyeing for long, like a gadget or a piece of jewellery or designer goodies, there cannot be a greater gift than a health insurance plan to safeguard your finances. After all, giving and receiving gifts on festivals can only be a pleasurable act if you and your loved ones are protected.

Medical exigencies in life are unavoidable, but you can always be prepared for such situations. The lack of a strategy to deal with health emergencies can trigger immense financial distress and also deprive your loved ones of proper medical treatment. By gifting a health insurance policy, you can shield your family against severe health crises and also safeguard them from monetary troubles that may arise due to illnesses, medical expenses, hospitalization costs, and loss of income due to disability.

Also, the dangerously high air pollution levels during this festival has become a norm every year and for many people, it signals months of health troubles that make their medical expenses go up significantly. A health insurance plan can go a long way in reducing their distress triggered by poor air quality.

Introducing the Reliance Insurance Gift Card

If you are searching for a health insurance scheme that you can gift your loved ones this Diwali without any hassles, look no further. Reliance General Insurance has recently launched an Insurance Gift Card – a prepaid card that works like a regular gift voucher and can be used to buy a health insurance policy from Reliance General Insurance. The gift card is available in denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, up to a maximum amount of Rs. 10,000 per individual, and can be purchased through the company’s website. It has a validity of six months and you can buy any health insurance policy instantly on the Reliance General Insurance portal.

This Diwali, bid adieu to conventional presents and give your family the gift of protection because a health insurance policy is more than just a gift
