Wedding rings found in the Mediterranean weeks after a couple’s boat capsized

Ahmed and Doudou survived, rescued by fishermen. Like the other survivors, the couple, in their early twenties, are still in shock.

“They were at sea for 48 hours when the boat capsized, all of them ended up in the water,” Ahmad Al Rousan, a cultural mediator for MSF in Italy, told CNN in a phone interview. Al Rousan was one of the team providing psychological support for the survivors rescued from Ahmed and Doudou’s boat a few days after it capsized in mid October.

When rescuers from the maritime rescue NGO Open Arms came across a half-sunken boat adrift in the Mediterranean on November 9, a few weeks after the disaster, they found a red backpack in it.
Covered in tiny sea creatures, the rucksack contained just a few necessities for the crossing. A couple of shirts, a spare pair of shoes, a phone charger.

And two wedding rings inscribed with the names Ahmed and Doudou.

“In the first moments, we thought that it probably belonged to someone that was dead or lost in the trip,” Riccardo Gatti, the president of Open Arms Italy, told CNN. “The significance and the meaning of what this was like ‘Wow … here’s something that really belonged to someone and we do not know where they are or if they still are’.”

Open Arms shared photos of the backpack and its contents, including the rings, on social media. The group also passed them to MSF and other organizations they knew provided support to the survivors.

Rescuers working in the Mediterranean often find personal items lost at sea. But the odds of reuniting them with their owners — if they are still alive — are next to none. Al Rousan has been working in various rescue operations for nine years and he can’t remember it ever happening.

“When (Open Arms) contacted us, I told them it was impossible to find the owners,” he said. But they tried anyway, passing the photos of the backpack to some of the people who were on the same boat as Ahmed and Doudou. “And then they called us and said the backpack belonged to Ahmed,” Al Rousan said.

New report reveals the Mediterranean's rising death rate

“I spoke with Ahmed directly and he started to explain to me what’s inside, because the photo I sent was just of the backpack and some of the things on the deck,” he said, adding that Ahmed told him about the rings, explaining they were in the backpack because the couple was hoping to have them fixed after arriving to Europe. “They were little bit broken,” Al Rousan said.

“He told me he was really happy to see the photo and he was very emotional about the rings, but he’s still in shock and said ‘I keep thinking about the five people who lost their lives in front of us.”

Gatti said the rescue boat’s crew have cleaned the backpack and its contents, and plan to send it to Ahmed as soon as their Covid-19 quarantine is over.

Christmas shopping done with weeks to spare

Rochelle with her presents
Rochelle MacKenzie-McQueen has done her Christmas shopping with weeks to spare

When the November lockdown was announced a “mini-rush” of shoppers headed for the High Street, determined to squeeze in a bit of the normal festive experience before the shutters came down and the closed signs went up.

But for Rochelle MacKenzie-McQueen there was no need to scramble into action.

She started weeks ago and now has her Christmas gifts in the bag, for around 10 friends and family members.

“Normally I would have waited until early December,” she says. “But because of Covid I thought, I’ll just get them now.”

The 29-year-old has a medical condition that means she has to be particularly careful to avoid the virus, so she shopped online. But she could see another lockdown was looming and knew others would be doing the same.

“I thought better to get it done early, because as soon as Black Friday hits everyone is going to be trying to order,” she says.

Now she’s relieved the pressure is off.

Christmas shoppers before lockdown on Oxford Street
Shoppers on London’s Oxford Street before the second lockdown came in

Even in a normal year there is a divide between those of us feeling a bit smug that by Guy Fawkes Night we’ve done everything, down to the labels and ribbons, and those of us planning an adrenaline-fuelled dash around the stores on Christmas Eve.

But in 2020 it is harder to work out how to tackle it. The face masks, hand sanitiser and queues have made the shopping experience an uncomfortable balance of risk and reward. We don’t even know exactly where we’ll be able to shop and when, whether deliveries will come on time. It is even less clear whether there will be bargains to be found or if some things will be hard to get.

Recent surveys for American Express and John Lewis suggested that, as a result, more of us planned to get ready for Christmas early this year. The department store found that less than 2% of us were going to leave it until the last minute, while 60% of us hoped to have all the presents, prosecco, pyjamas and panettone sorted by the end of November.

Laura Pemblington has not only bought all of her Christmas presents – for her parents, her husband, her two young boys and a few other friends and family – but she has wrapped and carefully stashed them out of sight.

“I just sat here one night and said, ‘I need to cheer myself up.’ I made myself a hot chocolate, put on Elf – that’s my favourite Christmas film – and wrapped.”

That was about three weeks ago now. As for shopping, she started that during the first lockdown in the spring.

“There were some good deals,” she says. “Because I was sat at home I thought, ‘I’ll buy that.’ Before I knew it, I was done. I was shocked myself.”

She thinks she saved money too as long as she can be disciplined

Scarlett Johansson planned wedding in weeks

Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost planned their surprise intimate wedding in “a few weeks” as they only wanted friends and family.

The 35-year-old actress – who was previously married to Ryan Reynolds and Romain Dauriac – recently tied the knot with the 38-year-old comedian in a surprise wedding at her home after only planning the details in a number of days.

A source told PEOPLE: “They only planned the wedding for a few weeks. Just close friends and family attended.”

Another added: “They wanted a quiet, private ceremony with their close friends and family, and they pulled it off.”

The pair got engaged in May 2019 after two years of dating and announced their nuptials on the Instagram account for Meals on Wheels, a hunger-fighting charity they’ve long supported.

The post read: “We’re thrilled to break the news that Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost were married over the weekend in an intimate ceremony with their immediate family and loved ones, following Covid-19 safety precautions as directed by the CDC.

“Their wedding wish is to help make a difference for vulnerable older adults during this difficult time by supporting @-mealsonwheelsamerica.”

Meanwhile, the “Black Widow” star is set to appear and produce “Bride”, which has been described as a “genre-bending” exploration of the “Bride of Frankenstein” story, which is a joint venture between Apple TV+ and A24.

“Gloria” filmmaker Sebastián Lelio is to direct the movie, which he has been writing with Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo.

Scarlett said in a statement: “It is long overdue for Bride to step out of the shadow of her male counterpart and stand alone.

“Working alongside Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum, Sebastian and I are extremely excited to emancipate this classic anti-heroine and reanimate her story to reflect the change we see today.”

Nikki Bella Says She’s Been Dreaming About Her Exes Two Weeks After John Cena’s Wedding

Dreams have the magical ability to transport us to another world. And let’s be real, we’ve  probably all had the kind of dreams where we revisit certain moments and conversations hoping for closure, especially when it comes to breakups. This seems to be the case for Nikki Bella regarding her ex-fiancé John Cena. In a new episode of her podcast, The Bellas, released Wednesday, she opened up to her twin sister and fellow new mama Brie Bella about the unexpected direction her dreams have taken lately.

“I have a confession,” she began. “I’ve been having these crazy, weird vivid dreams lately, and you’re not going to believe who’s in them and the conversations that we’re having.”

Nikki then goes on to explain that in the midst of Scorpio season, it’s expected that our intuition will be enhanced — and that’s what she links her unusual dreams to. “It’s supposed to be where we get a deeper understanding of ourselves, even getting clarity in the past and my dreams have been that,” she explained.

In her dreams, Nikki mentions that she has been having “full-on conversations with exes, as if we met up for coffee.” And although she doesn’t specifically name John Cena as the mysterious ex appearing in her dreams, it’s easy for us (and for Brie) to connect the dots.

“If you’re talking about John, that was six years of your life. We’re allowed to say it, it was a long time,” says Brie.

Cena and Bella split in 2018, and both have since moved on and celebrated big milestones: Nikki and fiancé Artem Chigvintsev recently welcomed their baby boy Matteo in August, while Cena married Shay Shariatzadeh in October in a secret ceremony.

In the end, we’re happy to see that both Cena and Bella had their dreams come true — in one way or another!

Scarlett Johansson & Colin Jost’s Wedding Took Just Weeks to Plan

For so many people, planning a wedding is a long, long process. There are tons of choices involved and every detail seems so important. But thanks to COVID-19, weddings — and wedding-planning — looks a lot different these days. For many of our favorite celebrity couples, it has meant calling off a day they’d planned for months. For others, it’s meant making things official ASAP — and that seems to be the case for Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost, who, according to a source in People, managed to successfully plan their wedding ceremony in only a matter of weeks — which is insanely impressive.

Just a year after Jost proposed, the couple said their “I do’s” in an intimate ceremony at Johansson’s home in Palisades, New York, in October. A source told People, “They only planned the wedding for a few weeks. Just close friends and family attended.”

We’re glad to hear that the Saturday Night Live writer and Black Widow star’s small wedding was in line with CDC recommendations (which, we’d argue, are the best kinds of weddings nowadays).

Their wedding isn’t the only thing that got our approval though: Johansson and Jost’s union was announced with the help of the charity, Meals on Wheels America — an organization that helps address hunger and isolation among senior citizens in the U.S. The happy couple decided to give the organization the honor of announcing their marriage, and they did so beautifully.

“We’re thrilled to break the news that Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost were married over the weekend in an intimate ceremony with their immediate family and love ones, following COVID-19 safety precautions as directed by the CDC,” the organization announced on Instagram.

“Their wedding wish is to help make a difference for vulnerable older adults during this difficult time by supporting @mealsonwheelsamerica. Please consider donating to celebrate the happy couple by clicking the link in our bio.”

During a time that’s unsettling and more nerve-wracking than we could ever imagine, it’s great to see the couple using their platform to shine a light on important causes. As for their wedding, sometimes all you need is a few friends and family to make it memorable, and Jost and Johansson’s seems to have been perfect.

Colin popped the question by presenting Scarlett with an 11-carat engagement ring, which she showed off that July when she headed to San Diego Comic-Con.

Last October, Avengers star Scarlett gushed about how well her man did with his proposal.

She said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show: “It was surprising — he’s got a lot behind that news desk he’s hiding,” she joked, referring to his job as Weekend Update host of Saturday Night Live.

“He’s very charming and very thoughtful and romantic. But yeah, I was surprised. Even if you kind of imagine what that moment’s gonna be like, it’s still a beautiful moment.”

The big day saw Colin married for the first time, while Scarlett has been married two times before, to Ryan Reynolds from 2008 to 2010 and to Romain Dauriac from 2014 to 2017.

She shares daughter Rose with Romain.
